Canada has over 800 land claims issues between the government and other parties in our court system.
Last June, the UN passed a resolution that would protect the rights of indigenous peoples around the world, including their claims on land and resources. Canada and Russia were the only two countries that voted against it.
Canada spent eleven years working on this document, it was a surprise to see the vote. We have a new government now - things are changing here.
btw - did you notice that only 4 countries have any form of legal history when it comes to dealing with aboriginal land claims and rights? It's rare to see the violence associated with middle-eastern land claims in any of those 4 countries. I think it comes down to mutual respect and having a procedure in place to handle disputes.
Maybe the middle-eastern countries could learn something from our experience.
