Anti-semitism in Europe

I'll give you that anti-semetic is usually used to mean anti-jew. It is not then a given that semite means jew. Y'ken?
You're focusing solely on the etymological origins of the term whilst ignoring the history. It was coined by a German racist who thought it sounded more respectable than Judenhass (Jew hatred), which is why it is widely understood to refer exclusively to anti-Jewish sentiment.

Many people prefer to use "anti-Jewish" in place of "anti-Semitic", but if someone's trying to make a point about anti-Jewishness and uses the term "anti-Semitic", it's a bit crap to turn round and say "Ah, well, you can't use that word because Arabs are Semites too, so ner ner." What's the point when you know exactly what they mean?

grrrr there really is some ignorant fucks on here who accuse me of been racist yet use words such as jewishism hahahaha

cause I like it when terms are precisely explained and understood by people. Call me a cunt, but I prefer to make people think about the origins and meanings of terms they bandy around. Cause I think that's helpful to debate, when looking at the origin of a term gets a person looking at the history behind it.

must go now but i'm sure i'll speak to you tomoz mr i'm a boring cunt,up the union et cetera et cetera i live off benefits blah blah blah

European anti-semitism led to the destruction of his homeland and he's still living with the consequences four generations later.

I disagree, it was the failure to address the anti-semitism of Nazi Germany in good time, the resultant guilt of that failure, and a desire to have a speedy fresh start which led to it.

What is Jewishness? Please explain it to me......do you mean judaism

Its a religion not a race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Same as been a muslim or a christian
It's neither and both. Judaism is the religion, Jewish is the race. It's a religion because of all the spiritual bollocks and it's a race because of the Halakhic definition of a Jew - ie someone whose mother is Jewish. It passes through the maternal line only because only a mother can be 100% sure that a child is hers.

Israel uses Hitler's definition rather than the Halakhic one - anyone with Jewish blood within 3 generations regardless of faith.

You can't really stop being a Jew. Conversion to a religion such as Hinduism or Buddhism isn't generally considered to make you a non-Jew. Conversion to another Abrahamic faith might do the trick in the eyes of the religiously inclined, but being an atheist definitely doesn't.

I know three 'born again' jesus-jews, one of whom is a clown and does cool clown stuff (like unicyclyng and balloon shapery)

Where do you draw the line? with the sephardic, or with earlier or later diasporas? Why would you want to make a line anyway? They are a a diverse and much afflicted people conjoined by language religion and circumstance. Three centuries previous to them it was the celts whose clines held sway in western europe. What does it really matter ffs? Just let folks be who they are imo.

And how did that not start with European anti-semitism?

Also worth noting that, as far as the politicians were concerned, the "fresh start" wasn't for the Jews in Europe, it was for a Europe without Jews (and the Jews anywhere else but here).

Before the late 1930's Zionism was an odd quirk to secular Jews and literal heresy for the orthodox - the Messiah is supposed to lead the people back to the Promised Land and most thought that they really ought to be waiting for Him to arrive. Secular Jews just didn't fancy moving to the desert much. Attitudes weren't just changed by the horrors of Nazi Germany, they were pretty much forced to change when Free Europe and the US closed their borders to Jewish refugees from Occupied Europe and there was nowhere else to go.

Agree, but I have a pedantic point to make. There is no common language for world Jewry (any more than there is for Christianity). Battles raged over whether to adopt Yiddish, German or Hebrew as the official language of Israel.

When they opted for Hebrew, they had to reinvent the language because it only existed in ancient texts and wasn't of much use in the modern world.

Most of the settlers seem to speak Hebrew very badly with a heavy Brooklyn accent. Some seem relieved when they realise you speak English so they can scream insults at you more fluently. :D

it is clear that there is a deep racism within the Jewish religion but this does not justify why they suffered so much. Do people think maybe the Christian religion is also in its basis racist?

.

"There is a deep racism within the Jewish religion"? :hmm: You're going to have to explain this.

I think the main reason is simply that Jews have always been the most obvious group to scapegoat

Not "the most obvious", but certainly the easiest, because even where we assimilated, we mostly retained at least vestiges of our culture and religion.

Jewishness is a multi-faceted culture (i.e. not all Jews are the same) which may (or may not) include the practice of Judaism.

The bloke who used the term probably has English as a second or third language, though, and doesn't know that a better term is "Judaeophobia" (i.e. an irrational fear of, prejudice against or hatred of Jews).
What's your excuse?
