I meant here like in NC, or anywhere around here. It's clear what the message was. It's not like bears are easy to come by. And it's not like a bear is one of the better places to stick a poster on. It's very unusual and whoever did it put some thought into it.

Yes, it's unusual. It's bizarre. It's sinister. It's hateful. And speculation will be that racism is a possible motive. But unless there's some iconography I'm missing from my cultural viewpoint, there is nothing in the reporting I've seen that marks this out as a racist act.

I agree. People could want him dead for other things. It'd be hard to make the distinction. I think in this case when you take into account who did it and what it was done for it was about race. First it was done to get a reaction from the students, nothing more. Being kids they'll see it as a race thing especially with the nooses being found recently on campuses across the US. It's probably a young person that did it for the reasons I gave earlier. Put those two together and I see it as a young guy, maybe a student, wanting to give left minded college kids a ruckus. And with it being that superficial then race becomes the main thing.

A dead bear cub draped in Barack Obama posters has been found at the entrance to a university in North Carolina, police said today.

Police and wildlife officials are investigating the incident at the Western Carolina University.

Maintenance workers found the 34kg (75lb) bear cub in front of the administration building at the entrance to the campus.

It had been shot, and Obama posters were stapled together and placed over its head.

"Someone evidently was wanting to draw attention to the election," Tom Johnson, the chief of university police, told the Asheveille Citizen's Times newspaper.

"If we find out who they are, we'll make sure they'll get some attention themselves."

Leila Tvedt, a spokeswoman for the university, said the institution "deplores the inappropriate behaviour that has led to this troubling incident".

"We cannot speculate on the motives of the people involved, nor who those people might be," she added.

"Campus police are cooperating fully with authorities to investigate this matter."

University police asked state wildlife officials to remove the dead cub and help in the investigation.

The bear hunting season in North Carolina began last week.

Why couldn't it be? It could and it might have. It wasn't directed at black people. WCU is not a black school though there are a small %. This was a prank type thing not a burning cross.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Authorities in North Carolina said the dumping of a dead bear cub draped in Barack Obama signs was a student prank, not a political statement.

Officials said seven Western Carolina University students were involved, and possible charges are being discussed with the local prosecutor.

The students told authorities they took political signs at random to cover the bear's wound and prevent blood from spilling into the bed of the truck they were driving.

Officials say the students discovered the cub, which had been shot in the head, while camping over the weekend and brought it back to a gathering at an apartment near campus Sunday night. It was during that gathering, say officials, that a student suggested placing the bear at the base of a statue at the main entrance to the campus.

It's the most apparent motive. Unless there's stuff we don't know. Are we to believe those kids didn't realize what people might think?

Actually, I don't think of university students as kids.

I also believe that they can have very strong ideas about stuff.

Universities are often a good place to recruit for X, Y or Z cause.

I should imagine that pro-life groups have no trouble whatsoever finding support.
