I thought 'coon' was more a British association. Could be wrong though.
Could be.
I'm Canadian and have heard 'coon used more that once as a racial slur. Bear - well, not that I can remember. But I'm not an American.

Coon
(U.S. and U.K) a black person. Possibly from Portuguese barraco, a building constructed to hold slaves for sale (1837),[44][45] or from the c. 1830 American folk song "Zip Coon". See also Minstrel show, Coon song.
I'm afraid that going by what I know of US (and other) unis today, the possibility that it was a student who did this awful thing cannot be ruled out.
Could be.

I'm asking why you are certain it is a racist incident. There is nothing in the article to suggest it is. Indeed, it says the motivation is unknown.Don't make me laugh, danny.

So, maybe the message was "Just as it is open season, so it is open season on you, Obama".The bear hunting season in North Carolina began last week.
I assume they were posters of Obama's face, and the idea was that the bear was an Obama effigy, of sorts. Why put the posters only on the bear's head?

Not so cryptic.
Not so cryptic.
(Did you see the Star of David on the ghost effigy's head, btw?)
Well, that would signify the existence of pretty strong views amongst at least some sections of the young rather than those views just being held by old timers lost in the past - so likely to be a problem for a long while yet rather than one fading away.
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/09/four_george_fox_students_confe.htmlFour students at George Fox University in Newberg confessed to hanging an effigy of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama from a tree on campus and were suspended for up to a year, the university president announced Tuesday.
The students, whose names are not being released, have been suspended on a long-term basis and must complete community service.
Other sanctions include community service and multicultural education, which must be completed before the students can return to campus, said Brad Lau, vice president of student life.
The students were singled out during a campus investigation late last week as those responsible for hanging a life-size cardboard cutout from a tree on campus with a sign saying "Act Six reject."
Act Six is a scholarship and leadership program for Portland students, many of whom are minorities.
Students are known for having strong views though, regardless of what those views are.

Paddington bear: 'I'm going into hiding and restricting my marmite ad appearances until this business blows over'

Maybe it is a racist incident; it's certainly a possibility. But if you have no information other than what's in the Guardian, then you don't know it is.
It's an unpleasant incident. Definitely. But we know no more than that.

There are a lot of Americans who believe that a black man should never run for the country's highest office. To whit, there are many racists in the US who would dearly love to take a shot at Obama.
What I find so laughable is the way in which some of you automatically - and without much thought - have seized on my words as though I'm trying to make some sort of tenuous connection between the colour of the bear's fur and Obama's skin colour. How very lazy of you.
You really must try harder.![]()
No I didn't.you (and others) automatically seized on my post as 'evidence' of how I was 'attempting to link the colour of the bear's fur to Obama's skin colour'.![]()
Both statements are correct. However it does not follow from them that the only reason for wanting to shoot Obama (or any other presidential candidate) is racism. There are a lot of Americans who believe that a black man should never run for the country's highest office. To whit, there are many racists in the US who would dearly love to take a shot at Obama.
What a bizarre thing to do. It's difficult to see any kind of racist angle, or any angle for that matter.
