Anti-Atos National Demo - Glasgow Assessment Centre, Wed 19th February

It means that the DWP has overachieved with putting people on workfare, imposing sanctions, persuading people to sign off, delaying the start of claims etc. Seldom has so much been so competently hidden.

and yet it is still not enough! now, forcing people into penury is a competitive market!

'Atos may lose fit-for-work tests contract as ministers line up rival firms
Government seeking additional providers to offer further capacity and then take over contract, leaked DWP review says'

I'm very curious who left that sign in WsM. Someone went to some trouble to paint up a board and deposit around the corner (the JC is on the other side of the same building). I bet it was an employee of the DWP or ATOS (the receptionist at the gulag is a right mardy cow). This wasn't someone just idling past and shouting random abuse (which, given WsM, I half expected to see).

Or maybe my paranoia is kicking in again :hmm:

UK unemployment falls by 125,000 to 2.34 million
what does 'fall' mean exactly?

Like Greebo said... but all you need to do is read the article:

UK unemployment falls by 125,000

According to the ONS figures, the number of self-employed workers increased by 172,000 to 4.37 million

So as work programme providers push people onto working tax credit and self-employment, unemployment falls. Of course most don't have a real business/job to do and are actually self-unemployed, but prefer the no contact regime of WTC to the savagery of JSA/ESA, even though it's less money.

and when Labour examines and replaces the Work Programme they will suddenly seem to have created unemployment on a large scale. The same when many of these self-employed people collapse because they have been misinformed and poorly served.

This is reckless irresponsibility.

I really wanted to go to this but decided it was too big a risk that if it was known by the DWP that I'd attended then they'd use it to say I was fit for work. On the day I felt a bit what the hell, and thought sod it I won't be intimidated into not protesting, but as it happened I couldn't make it anyway between a medical appointment, and it being half term so having the kids at home. I was able to drive by just to see what was going on (it felt like some sort of solidarity, I was going to take biscuits, but would have been late for my appointment so couldn't). Sadly there were only five or so people there, and as the atos place is in a car park anyway, no passing traffic of any kind. It's good to see though what people managed to do in some places. Couldn't find any reporting at all of it in the national press when I looked yesterday, but I think local media have covered it in some places.

Is this true? :hmm:

If they do get released, expect even more chaos and poor decision making as the DWP wait for a new contractor.

btw, it looks like ATOS have decided the contract isn't worth the damage done its reputation and risks to its global brand/other services, so people power will have won, expect the ptb to take cognisance of this, things will get harder for benefit campaigners, etc.

I expect IDS' bootmless pit of cash (the one he uses to pay for the lawyers sent to fight every decision he doesn't like, which is to say every decision) will be deployed. He will just throw enough moneyat ATOS to convince them to stay until the contract expires and leave Labour with a giant shitting mess to clear up. There's no way the government will let ATOS fuck up their 'great moral crusade' this close to an election.

Or something.

It must be seen as further evidence of just a) what cunts the DWP has become under IDS and b) how fucking poor the WCA is if ATOS want no further part of it.

That being said, anyone who wants to drink from the poison chalice must be even worse.

According to The Mirror, in Southend, ATOS workers walked out in support, not sure how many, etc.

btw, in other times, the W/P Secretary would have fallen on their sword ages ago for the amount of DWP failures.

Yesterday I was spokesperson for ATOS DEMO, the day started with a home interview on local radio at 8.00 am, which in my world meant getting up at 5.00, to allow my drugs enough time to work for me to coherent; I then had 2 hours to recover to attend my local demo at Leicester.
Arriving slightly early to meet up with my fellow organisers, we were immediately approached by a police officer with a community support officer, asking who the organiser was; we informed them there was no one person locally, we were a group of ATOS survivors protesting about the companies role in Welfare Reform. This really surprised them, I really don’t think they’d come across a protest that wasn’t organised by a Party or group before; on refection the age of both officers might have something to do with this, they were too young to remember what genuine community activism is – the coming together of individuals against/for a common cause, without a Political agenda. Later during the Demo, my carer was speaking with them about the day and reasons behind it; he says the were actually interested and not only sympathised with us, but were impressed by our campaign, I believe this showed in the way they remained at a discreet distance through the programme.

stories of the day, police generally seem to be very helpful

After being a part of the march for a alternative in 2011. The TUC and all affiliated organisations failed to act on the wave of its success. A huge nuclear arsenal of protest in excess of 250000 people were unleashed on the capital and the powers that be quaked at the thought of such a mob exercising more than just its democratic right to wield a placard.

Given the gross molestation of the people of Britain both by its government and it's elected representatives why oh why has nothing been done to follow that massive protest up?

The TUC betrayed the people by toeing the establishment line. We are all powerless without national coordination of protests against whichever issue is at the forefront.

Let's expect more. And stop all the navel gazing. Lobby the TUC theunion movement is there do the unemployed too!

Don't bother writing to your MP they are a waste if time.

Protest protest protest in as large a group as is possible and look after each other!
