Another Teenager Murdered In Brixton (Guildford Rd, 16/07/08)

What Hendo said ^^^

And if they start a fight, I am not going to walk away from it - I tried that for a while and it made no fucking difference at all.

Let's be hoping that no one is carrying a knife if it all kicks off then

i cycled past the spot where the guy was stabbed just ten minutes before it happened. this murder has genuinely shocked me as i feel it has struck close to home. there was a menacing gang of youths hanging around Stockwell Gardens estate as there are most evenings when i go past, not far away from the crime scene. often these guys hang out by the fried chicken place on the corner opposite the Swan. its obvious that open dealing of drugs is going on , and no doubt other criminal activity is too, regularly there. why the police don't do something to break this cycle of criminality is beyond me. ditto the knives thing. if we had Singaporian style law enforcement as regards zero tolerance of blade possesion in London and hard community service sentences handed down regularly and enforced, we wouldnt get these problems. Everyone would know where they stood pretty quickly. We are way too lax at the moment and kids don't just think they can get away with it , they KNOW they can.

Why are you only blaming the police? I think you'll find the police do arrest and charge loads of people in connection with overt drug dealing wherever it happens (it's regularly mentioned in connection with Coldharbour Lane) ... but the CPS don't prosecute to the full extent of the law, youth justice agencies give out warning after warning, the Courts give out piss weak sentences, the Probation Service fail to provide sufficient, rigorous community sentences, prisons fail miserably to do anything like rehabilitation ...

Yes, the Criminal Justice System is piss weak and the bad guys know that ... but the police failing to make arrests is only part of the problem (and, I would suggest, the least important part - if the people currently arrested were dealt with robustly there wouldn't be a need to arrest many more ... ).

If you want to make a difference, you have to get your target right. The CJS is more than just the police.

I don't have an alternative to stop and search - what I and the kids I worked with objected to was the way in which it was carried out....to be confronted daily with those who were 'roughed up a bit' after being stopped and searched (ie assaulted) and then denied the option of reporting it due to the fact that the officer in question would cover their badge number and refuse them access to the appropriate paperwork does essentially bring into question the validity of this procedure....the kids I worked with were members of Lambeth Youth Forum where they expressed their concerns in a public forum with members of local council present and pioneered a programme around it that was taken to the US and used as a tool in schools to educate young people around their rights if and when they are stopped and searched. I'm now working in Australia where worryingly things are mirroring the trend of the scene in London.....

That is the issue with the majority of people. It is simple enough to deal with by competent supervision and management, accompanied by robust response to complaints.

...and then denied the option of reporting it due to the fact that the officer in question would cover their badge number and refuse them access to the appropriate paperwork...
That does not deny the option of anything - it adds a further ground for complaint. If the officers carried out a check on the details given (which they would undoubtedly do) the computer audit trail should be able to identify them. If they are a vehicle, the vehicle registration mark / identification code (three letters marked on the side / roof usually) should identify them.

Anyone in this situation should take as detailed a description of the officers as possible and formally complain. If there is CCTV in the area, make a formal complaint for footage as a Data Subject - if the CCTV unit won't supply a copy, formally advise them that it is evidence in a complaint and request that they retain it (and obtain a written acknowledgement to that effect).

There are not many instances during routine policing where officers obscure their numbers now but, if they have, it most definitely does not deny the option of complaining.

DB is correct here.

Should a check be done, the PNC will record the details including time, date, who actually conducted the check, what terminal it was conducted on and should (if its done over the radio it has to be typed in by the operator) record who requested the check, where it was done and for what reason (though this doesnt apply to the in-car checks, which automatically record where the car is, what MDT (in-car computer) terminal conducted the check and who was logged onto the MDT). All PR traffic is also recorded digitally and stored later (and is easily obtainable), should further evidence be required.

This check is incredibly easy to do, and most if not all boroughs will have at least one person on duty at all times who can do them, as can the vast majority of the supervisors in the three Metcall centres.

Does anyone know what the story is with this killing? There's an amazing amount of flowers and candles etc at his makeshift memorial and there's been loads of people down there, he was obviously a well-known boy. I haven't heard anything except what the BBC have said - someone told me The Scum was claiming he had coke wraps in his pocket but that doesn't seem to square with the public reaction.

There was a big water fight earlier involving lots of local kids. Some twat 'lost face' and came back and killed him. There were flowers and loads of water pistols laid at the scene of the murder.
