another fared dodging question

Cobbles said:
With a bit of luck, they'll start using effective punishments like instant branding at stations. That should cut out fare dodging. As an alternative, an instant arrest and night in the cells would work fine. We all pay (through taxation) for public transport - i'm subsidising nobody.

You are a Daily Mail reader and I claim my five pounds. Well done sir!

While we're at it, why don't we cut the hands off theives.

Knobber.

A nifty little trick, if you're travelling on the Reading line, is to just claim you've come from Barnes Bridge; there's no ticket office or machine there, so they're not allowed to charge penalty fares from that station. Actually, if we had a list of all of those stations, it'd be pretty handy; you just memorise that and claim you're travelling from the nearest one. Obviously you've got to be travelling in the right direction, though...

Hm. Must remember my old landlord's address for their address-checker. He's a twat and he still owes me money anyway...

I got caught out at Herne Hill yesterday evening, without a ticket. I told the nice fare evasion man that I'd lost my ticket and chucked it on the train, as there aren't usually ticket inspectors at Herne Hill. It was a fare cop, I didn't buy a ticket, I got caught, no point in making a fuss (and the chap was ded grateful I wasn't tbh)

Anyway, I paid a tenner, but what's the likelyhood of them pursuing me for the other tenner?

Obviously it would be very naughty of me to do so, but it occured to me, that what's to stop people giving false names and addresses? How would they catch up with you then?

So... Why are you so special that you're entitled not to pay for rail travel while everyone else has to...? Go on, tell how you think public transport is unreasonable overpriced in the uk and why you expect it to be free...

here we go again...differing moralities

everyone gets that little thrill when they realize the bus conductor's not going to come and collect their fare....should you go and demand to pay? of course no one does that....

most people have jumped on a train without a ticket because they were about to miss it and didn't have time to buy a ticket....or forgot their money that day and most people don't see that as evil..

to leave the house with no intention of buying a ticket and just paying the penalty fare on the rare occasions you are caught is a policy that divides the house....are you winning one over on the oppressive state/corporate monster or failing to maintain the moral standards that society relies upon to function?

if we want a fair society where the haves help out the have-nots people surely have to play by the rules. Why should I vote for a socialist party (if we had one) in order to ensure a good safety net for the less fortunate if it only encourages scroungers to live on the state etc etc? Why should you pay for an expensive ticket every day when the service is so shit and it's just generating profit for some dubious train operating company?

It always seem strange that the people that seem to want the state to do the most, and to have some utopian socialist society, also seem the ones that don't see wrong in not paying for their train ticket, don't have a problem with theft from Tesco (but do from little old ladies).

it's a old familiar argument here, just like the "should I have a maid/houseboy?". It makes me all nostalgic, like listening to the Archers or the shipping forecast, I love it :D

I'm very special. My teachers and parents told me so on many occasion. Who the fuck are you in your ivory tower?

You never do anything wrong? You never break the law? Well woop de fucking woo for you.

I didn't start this thread as a "Fare Dodging Crap/Not Crap" debate did I, and actually asked for it NOT to go that way.

Do run along now, there's a good lad.

Well... You're expecting an over-congested, under-maintained transport system to support you. Do I make life harder for others around me be assuming I can have a free ride while everyone else subsidises my travel...? My life...? My enjoyment of life...? The only time I break the law I pay for it.

Oh, and at least I can write a reply without swearing...

Tough. Are you paying for this website to take your messages...? Unless you are, please don't expect to be in charge of it...!

One reason might be that it costs £ 30 a week for a zone 1-3 pass and that`s nearly eight tenths of the living allowance that the government gives you to survive on when your unemployed...now back to you TORY BOY>>>>>

Oh yeh and mine's been on BR not on the tube or anything.

yeah, no-one is going to stop paying or start paying over it and it only causes resentment.

Nothing like the resentment that people like me who have to travel on public transport and pay my fares feels every time the fares go up to pay for your theft, or when I read the smug, self-congratulatory messages from the fare dodgers on here.

But hey, don't let it bother you lot that a whole lot of harmless, complete strangers with their own families to keep are supporting you too!

Funnily enough this country has a whole pack of people who can't get a job either and I guess quite a lot of them would find it offensive that it is OK to assume that they should steal fare money and lie.

Feed a stereotype of the unemployed as shiftless scroungers, why don't you.

Nonsense....
We have in the UK the most expensive transport system in the Western world and that`s got nothing to do with fare dodgers. What it has to do with ( and by the way its might be public transport but its run for private profit) has to do with paying the parasite share holders dividends which rob the system of the investment that it needs.
Instead of you bitchin about the small number of us who cant afford to pay exhorbitant fares why don`t you concentrate your anger at the (tory) process which resulted in the give away of millions of pounds of public money to a small bunch of profiteers...
Maybe the next time your Fares go up..you can go and ask the directors of the company you use to justify their very large salaries.....

eh how can you " steal" what you dont have???? numb nuts..and when did you start talking for the unemployed????
Oh and get back to your desk...

Look, it may not be pleasant when people take the moral high ground with you - and make suggestions they don't exactly put sensitively, but your defensiveness is a touch offensive so you don't get any medals either!

I know its bloody hard, but your argument doesn't hold water. You could save up a bit a week whilst you are travelling around free for a cheap bike off ebay or the local paper - or go to the local tip and pick up the bits like my brother did.

It just takes time when you haven't a lot of money, even though its harder for single people because the money you get is pathetic.

Oh and get back to your desk...

you can steal a service - and the extra money from my pocket when I pay my fares.

don't have nuts to numb :P

I started talking for the unemployed when you did

would be a clever trick if I could type a message and NOT already be at my desk

Oh Cermerty. If only we were as perfect as all the lovely people here, leading their perfect law abiding, fully contributing to society, and never taking anything lives.

That would be the fucking dream ;)

Fanci a pint whilst we wait for it to happen? Obviously after we've bought tickets and got jobs and become better members of society... :p

You're just a pair of spunk stains , ain't you?

Work in some shitty job but think you dererve so much better, don't you? Don't get laid much do you? How many folk went out for drinks on your birthday? 5? ten? hahaha. wankers.

When i read about folk being given kickings or being robbed at tube stations I always hope it's cunts like you.

Sweet boy. :) We must stop meeting like this.

Our transport system is the most expensive - probably because it is not subsidised properly and I agree that stinks, I agree that it stinks that most of it is about profits for companies. Their bad.

Not all transport systems are privately owned and I know one at least that is costing more because of fare dodgers. The numbers are not as 'small' as you think. Nor is the cost. In the end, the well off can and do pay the fares without too much struggle - or go by the car. By definition, most users of public transport are the less well off and they can ill afford to subsidise you and the other fare dodgers. It is not consolation to a mother when she spends the equivalent of a pair of trousers a week on her kids fares to school that you are feel it is all right to put her fares up because you have a beef with some shareholders she will never meet.

I don't actually feel angry about it but I would like to counter your suggestion of what I do with this idea - the next time you feel like dodging the fares, why don't you concentrate your energies on the Tory process that... etc.?

In the meantime, why not try and get a bike - put the cash you are saving towards one and then that single mum can buy her kids a pair of new trousers instead of going to Oxfam, perhaps.

Post reported... I wonder why people like Chica, etc, don't have jobs and think its cool to fair dodge... Perhaps because they can't post without swearing everyother word... Did I get laid...? Yep, this morning. :D And when I went for birthday drinks several people came along... :D And gosh, I have a fairly interesting, quite well paid job as well. :D Um, what was your point...?

I know we are both arguing against fare dodging and paying your bit when you can - but I don't agree with everything you say. It's a bit sweeping to say this: It always seem strange that the people that seem to want the state to do the most, and to have some Utopian socialist society, also seem the ones that don't see wrong in not paying for their train ticket, don't have a problem with theft from Tescos (but do from little old ladies).

Its a touch offensive and very untrue as it seems to suggest that fare dodgers are the employed and it claims that all socialist want to dodge fares and all fare dodgers are shop lifters.

The middle classes with their nice jobs and fare paying mentality are as capable of stealing from the system (they even pay lawyers to help them) whilst the unemployed are no more likely to.

I want a Utopian socialist state and I pay my fares. I actually believe - because I am currently employed - that I should even pay taxes to support the socialist state.

My argument about fare paying has nothing to do with morality which is hard to talk about that without getting too personal. It is about sheer pragmatics to me. We have to support everyone in our society - everyone! We have to do it for self-preservation because we never know when we and our family will need support in turn. To that end, everyone should contribute what they can when they can. Simple.

Stereotyping people is unhelpful, disrespectful, and not the best way to get anyone to see a point of view, although your post is a bit confusing because part of it seems to agree with that viewpoint (???).

Yeah i know..
But actually i understand their concerns about "others" riding for free while they have to pay...fair enough point. But i don`t dodge the trains because i don`t want to pay its because i can`t pay.
I will give you an example..i`m currently at a course via the DHSS in Bromley ( so all those asking me to get back to work may understand i`m actually trying very hard) and i currently live in Gypsy Hill. Now i get no assistance from the dole for travel costs and it would take me 2 hours to walk there.
Are those santimonious souls that argue i`m cheating them seriously expect me to spend 4 hours a day walking to and fro.
On a final note The reason i`m currently unemployed is because i contracted a skin disease which has meant that i`ve had to give up my job as a chef and re-train ( which is what i`m currently doing) and i`ve worked every day from the age of 16 until recently paying my taxs and all else besides..

I dont agree with fare dodging, but I used to do it as a kid, and i accept people will do it, regardless if the transport system cost 1p a day for any length of journey.

Lets not have this go totally into another slanging match. Please.

It's a shame I've already got a travelcard for the week, this thread makes me feel like going out faredodging just for the sake of it.

Its six miles from Gipsy Hill to Bromley. Assuming a person cycles at 10 mph, how long would it take that person to cycle there...?
