As I go to the Old Country for a week every christmas working somewhere where the office is shut is not really an issue for me. Working somewhere that expects me to cover skeleton staff to sit there doing nothing for 1 poxy day between xmas and new year is an issue.
Plus I get 25 days outwith bank holidays and those 4 days so not exactly hard done by.
Also if I did go into the office and work on one of those days I could claim TOIL.
A few years ago I did just that - except Australia it was the USA - I had a fantastic 6 week holiday - based in Georgia but went to Florida / New Orleans / Savannah amongst other places
You're lucky, we have to take all our holiday entitlement before the end of the year else it's lost.........also anything over 3 weeks at a time we have to get special permission for !

Our company will let a few days be carried over, but then you have to use them all up within a certain time.
We are not allowed more than two weeks off without special permission either, although one woman I work with had 3 weeks last year to go to Jamaica, then she wanted another three this year to go to Greece, as she said it wasn't possible to go to Greece for 2 weeks.
