Ann Widdecombe vs the Benefits Culture

I was none too impressed with that guy who (apparently - i missed his introduction) had loads of kids. Certianly the programme picked out some cheap easy targets for AW to lay into in the usual way. However when that other guy just 'appeared' and laid into him as well with the corny old taxpayers argument (which is utter bullshit since it's the government's money not his or hers) I felt a bit sorry for him. How did either of them think that was going to motivate him?

People out of work need more than some random simpleton or a dyed in the wool reactionary screaming at them. Gie them something to work toward, a proper career and a purpose. Not force them into a meaningless life of drudgery just so they can fulfill what the western world regards as their social responsibilities.

The voiceover said that the chap from Derby would be £46k pa better off if he got a job, but only for the first year. It conspicuously failed to mention what would happen after that year.

Also, I don't think those girls stuck at their job, the v/o conspicuously failed to mention that as well.

Worthless television. I dismiss it with a wave of my plump, tax-paying hand. Pffft.

that job was temporary; the boss told them he'd take them on for the summer. NO mention was made that i was aware abou them quitting. At the end it said that some woman featured had gotten a job (as if it were our business to know).

Also those girls were given an opportunity created in a rather disingenuous manner given that it came from a TV show. I bet the company were quite happy to extend the oppotunity given the free advertising.

Left to their own devices I wonder if that job would have been quite so easy to locate, eh anne!

I thought the understanding was it was a trial to get on an apprenticeship?

I'm not sure that a painting and decorating apprenticeship would occur to a couple of teenage girls in a million years. It's great that these opportunities exist, (and they would be making £60+ a week more than me) but it's probably pushed more towards boys than girls.

Remember that programme about a load of kids learning building trades? That was good - it actually followed them and their ups and downs and stuff.

The Government's money is our money, as we pay the majority of it as taxpayers, direct or indirect...

Ah, gratuitous insults as an excuse for missing the point.....

that old guy with 18 kids was a cunt though, absolute vile scum.

He certainly was a waste of space. The program was a bit better than Widdecombe's efforts the previous week, her David Attenborough-like ventures among the prostitutes.

Although this week she didn't get to go all Roger Cook running down the street shouting "I'm Ann Widdecombe from ITV".

Ann in running mode is indeed a curious sight. "It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all." However, I did warm to her slightly and momentarily when she was on the receiving end of Philpott's aggressive abuse.

intresting that indeed you have missed the point in thinking that you haev some specific say in waht money taken from you is spent on you don't. You have a general say in what it's spent on in so far as voting is concerened but even then it's only the vaugest and remotest say in what it's spent on.

To then assume in some asignine manner that this is your money as if it can be div'ed up in lots is absurd. Only a moron with limit capacity for thought would think so.

So please point out the graitious insults (plural????). Either you think this directly ie stand by your words and you are by defintition a moron or you don't in which case oyu made a moronic comment, either way damned ...

its still the taxpayers money mate...where do you think it comes from, outer space? if i saw a big chunk of my salery taken away through income tax (i don't yet, i'm a student, but i will) and then read about some vile horrible ungrateful slimeball of an excuse for a human being like that bloke get all that money in benefits he doesn't deserve then yeah i'd be annoyed and sickened, and rightly so.

I also think it's a it unfair for AW to have had a pop at the pair for not wanting to work in a factory - schools do no prepare kids for such work and spend all their time sinpiring students to aim higher. Perhaps that's a bad thing, it's what mine did. So no wonder peopel don't want crap jobs - they want their lives to mean something. And unless you want a career in that line of work what's the ultiamte point? surely society should be working toward moving people toward what inspires them that they can do and do well (and I don't just mean dreaming of winning the X Factor).

Ah, so I can go to Tescoes and dictate to them likewise as I pay their profits when I do my shopping. That's my money surely as well!

Or more accurately, it becomes the government's money.

Either way he has every right to be pissed off at the guy's selfishness.

No it's the government's money. That's the point. We know where it comes from, but where it comes from is not the point.

And we don't dictate policy regarding benefits on the basis of one northern hulk hogan look alike who can't use a condom.

It was obvious why the guy couldn't work. He had such an obnoxious personality disorder that nobody would ever want to employ him.

Surely no more than if you worked for Tesco (for example..) they could not dictate how you spend your wages after you are paid...

Agreed that policy should not be dictated on the basis of individual cases, but often it is (dangerous dogs, child abuse cases as examples).

Not to forget, of course, that demonising all claimants on the basis of one individual has always been the case... :(

so by that argument then if you buy a tv in dixons and then the manager of that store uses their wages to buy porn you don't approve of do you have the right to bitch about the manner in which the manager is spending that money you have given over to dixons?

or closer to home i've paid tax for the last 15 years which will cover the length of your education so can i complain that you are clearly wasting that money by posting bilge on internet bulletin boards in some selfish aim which acutally you have had no input into?

Have you paid the full cost of your education if not can i compalin when you fail to gaint he level which i deem appropreate for you consdiering it's my money...

it's not your money it's money given for goods and services for which no one wants to pay for but accepts it needs to be covered.

So you don't approve of this one persons spending it in that manner tough tits, deal with it you childish prat...

i've said in other threads (possibly earlier on in this one) that i'm on the recieving end of taxpayers money, as a student i get my fees paid for by the LEA and i'm eternally grateful. however, upon graduation i'll be working and paying tax, therefore in effect putting back into the system what i have taken out.

you're a fucking idiot if you think that students getting grants etc is in any way similar to this guy sponging off the state purely because he's a lazy twunt who can't be arsed. its swings and roundabouts. he's paid in fuck all yet is getting the money that could be better spent on other things. it isn't fair.

oh and with regard to buying a 'tv from dixons' its really not the same thing is it. when buying a tv you pay your money for a specific product. if the manager of dixons came up to me and said "alright, can you give us 300 quid so i can go and buy some porn?" i'd probably say no.

taxpayers should pay money into public services, healthcare, transport and to help people who genuinely need it. why should a thieving leech like this bloke get a single penny when he and his 'wives' are more than capable of earning a wage themselves yet just can't be arsed?

Because his kids would starve and we are a civilised country?

I am more pissed off about "my money" going into the black hole that is Iraq or the billions being wasted on some shitty Olympic nonsense.

One man with 18 kids is insignifcant to the billons wasted elsewhere.

Spot on. Most people on benefits arent like the fella on the rpogramme last night - and theres nothing you can really do about characters like that without the kids suffering.

Tax avoidance by the rich costs this country much more than benefit fraud.

why would they starve if he had a job? there's millions of people out there working long hours in low paid jobs just to put food on their families table and i have so much respect for them.

and yes, i agree about current foreign policy and the olympics being a far bigger fiscal issue. i never said that one leeching guy was the biggest problem taxpayers face, but that doesn't change my point that he doesn't deserve the money he's getting when he and his 'wives' are MORE THAN CAPABLE OF GETTING WORK AND SUPPORTING THEIR FAMILY.
