I liked Gantz, except the fucking end doesnt tell you anything

Yeah, that was pretty shittily annoying for me too.

Seen Paranoia Detective? And I know I always recommend them but they're the two best films I've seen in years - Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet.

I'll check it out. I didn't like Paprika for some reason. I know it was really beautifully drawn and the plot was pretty good, it just didn't grab me for some reason

I think it was because a lot of people told me that it was the best thing ever and so on so I had my expectations too high

Maybe I should try watching it sober on my own

you will...

not shonen ... not even shojou (though you could argue it has a slight mahou shojou undertone to it )

See I knew it..

Yea, you are right of course it certainly isn't shonen I was just lacking a better way to describe the differnce in tone between the two. I was trying to allude to the very slight (VERY SLIGHT) powerlevels and auras etc that are used in Noein which I know puts a lot of people off.

it's just natural that there will be elements of that kind of thing in most anime as of course all the writers artists and so forth will have grown up watching all the other things and will naturally refer to them.

and if that puts a lot of people off they must be massively fussy!

I think it's mainly an intial complaint of people new to anime, people who don't quite get it. I've tried getting a few friends into it and anything dbz power level simular has been quickly dissmissed as childish and not worth watching. Probably just my fussy freinds though.

Nah I don't think it's being fussy, I think a lot of the time it seems to be laziness on the part of the storywriters

Especially with the older stuff there was loads of 'Oh, why not just blow up the planet instead of thinking of something ingenious' etc

actual shonen stuff tends to be formulaic with lots of training and battling new more powerful enemies

this can lead to utter stupidity in fights dragon ball was a prime example of this

however this level of daftness doesn't really turn up all that much in any show that isn't centred around fighting

This one was the first anime movie I've seen. Japanese animation, in general, has come a long way since then.

I watched Akira a couple of weeks ago. It's amazing how dated some of the animation looks now

I still think it's beautifully drawn in a lot of places. just some of the characters look really basic

thats more to do with the guys style

look at steam boy (2004)

steamboy.jpg

charactor design is very simular

so is the guys use of light and cloud/steam

I'm just now discovering Death Note. I downloaded it a few months ago. The animation is unbelievable.

I meant the actual animation rather than the drawings. I suppose they do look kind of dated, but I'm guessing that's because it's so associated with Akira

Technolyze fucking rocks

I started watching it at 2am this morning and now I'm onto episode 16 :D

I need something else to watch afterwards

More doomed worlds with beautiful artwork and ridiculous plots?

I've just been watching the new-ish King of Fighters anime, it's pretty good if you like the computer game
