Andy Gill - "Why I Hate Coldplay"

I don't like them...

Because they're very dull.

That song 'Yellow', good grief, it's like Discharge never existed.

I think the article is really using Coldplay as a symbol for a greater evil, that is when something is popular it is assumed by the press and media that absolutely everyone wants to hear it/about all the time. The zeitgeist if you will. Big Brother also falls into this category with other sections of the media; it's not the only example of that particular style, merely at the head of the beast.

Also, am I naive to hope that this new Coldplay album may prompt teenagers to rush out and buy Eno's "Music For Airports" or "Apollo"?

typical snobby rubbish.

"coldplay doesn't engage you politically, it's like chris martin sitting down and putting his arm around you and making a cup of tea".

that sounds nice.

Martin is being interviewed on Front Row now and he's acting like a spoilt fucking child. Acting as if being interviewed is a real struggle for him, being a total arse.

He should be shot in front of his children.

Is that wrong of me to say that? I don't care. He's a twat.

I know; I just started a thread about it! He is such a prick!

they played a clip on the today programme this morning. in my half asleep state, i thought it was phil collins... (the bad phil collins, of course)

Nice one Andy, bob on.
When I first heard Coldplay I thought how the fuck can young lads play this terrible drab middle aged mans music, what a fuckin waste of good guitars and Amps.

Radiohead took a metaphorical razorblade to their genitals in order to convey that sense of hopeless sexless treadmill life.. In contrast Coldplay tried wanking before they had even grown a penis..
Email that to Andy Gill and you've surely got yourself a job.

Not entirely sure why Gill had to use up so much word space when he could have just written "Coldplay are mediocrities masquarading as soul searching musicians, fronted by a total, complete, utter hypocritical tosser." Colud have then devoted the rest of the space to something good. Scrutiny of Martin's two faced charity ilk would'nt have been a bad thing tho.

Its that puzzling assumption that teenagers should be buying old music for some reason.

...if that wasn't satire?

Actually I don't care if they get into Eno to be honest. I don't really care about how bad Coldplay are either. What I care about is the media and societal assumption that everyone likes listening to them such that they turn up everywhere.
