Andrew WK: Who Knew?

Can I just say that the whole of the "I Get Wet" album is fucking brilliant. Beautiful singalong pop songs played at 900mph with very hard guitars and voicebox-breaking vocals, and all clocking in at under 35 minutes. It reminds me a bit of the first Ramones album in its simplicity and is always worth digging out if you're limited on time. I never tire of it.

By the way, are we talking about Lee Scratch Perry, Jamaican genius extrordinaire, here? If so it sounds bonkers enough to just about work. :)

I think he is.

I heard Lee Perry's radio show on 6 a couple of months ago. He played loads of old rock n roll - and chatted on a fuckload as well of course :)

Yeah I heard he was producing Lee Perry's new album and I was just like "WTFFFF? the same Andrew WK who totally sucks arse?", dismissing the factoid out of hand. And then I read the very same article, and it turns out to be same guy. But yeah, apparently he has more going on than fucking shit rock records.
The world is a weird place indeed.

The same lyn perry that totally sucks arse for 30 years. Yep. That one.

Aha, thanks for clearing that up for me. I had naturally assumed it was the other Lee Perry we were talking about.
I don't think I said it was going to be good, but even from your clearly elevated plane you must be able to discern that to some of us it is a surprising choice of producer.

i knew.

i've never heard 'i get wet' though, but assumed it was probably a great album - stavros can usually be trusted on these things.

he was one of the drummers on that 77 drummers thing the boredoms did... :)

I didn't say that you endorsed it mate. I only mentioned that Perry has a record of working with anyone passing ( or meant to anyway :D)

Geoff was the last to know :(

Indeed so.
He appears to have taken Mr WK at face value - clearly a mistake and one I'm suprised at him for.

If you'd read your music mag hype at the time you'd probably have known he was regarded as a bit of a secretive studio genius type, or maybe heard the rumour that it was a joke that Dave Grohl had put together, or someone had, or that Andrew WK was real but wasn't the guy 'playing' him on stage or something along those lines

whatever, 'I Get Wet' doesn't bear repeated listening but it is very, very funny
at the right time.

I'm genuinely touched. Where's a blushing smiley when you need it? Simply put, it's 35 minutes of near-identical tunes about partying and pretty girls. AWK does seem to have the Marmite factor to a certain extent though. Download a few of the tracks and see if you like them.

On the contrary, he still insists that he's serious / irony free.

Everything Lee Perry has released in the last ten years has been unlistenable dirge. Can't imagine it makes any difference who produces it. Like polishing a turd.

True, but the 80s threw up some gems.

isn't he back with Sherwood?

I think whether irony is involved in AWK's music is dependent on how the individual listener perceives it. I myself love it without a hint of irony.

I don't think it's ironic. I just think it's funny. It's a kind of reductio ad absurdum approach to a certain style of rock music done with the kind of gusto that irony lacks.

i.e. it is done with love but is aware, and unashamed, of it's own ridiculousness

I think he's very self-aware, but proud of what he is. I think his ideology is, "This is me, if you like it great, if not who cares, we're still going to PARTY". :)
