Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain: Brilliant

London_Calling said:
(a) Why would a BBC production use police film when it has it's own footage ?

(b) Marr did state the numbers present (police out-numbered the miners and those 'with' the miners)

I'm more surprised by those who assumed Marr was anything other than an old skool leftie. I've never heard a single word from him or anyone else to support what people in this thread assumed to be the case (that he was and is a Tory).

I typed that rather quickly: what I meant to say is the BBC footage that was used was shot from the police point of view.

do you reckon if you say it enough, people will believe you?

You're known for oozing snide and disparagement mate. Leave it out - and I will ask for the last time....stop harassing me and trolling my threads.

I don't have to say it, most people already know what a tedious troll you are with your caricatured right wing statements. :p

Nino's upset because the Central point in his Political Spectrum is somewhere between the SWP and the CPGB.

LOL!!!! Whereas your position (if it were a true position) would be somewhere between The Monday Club and the BNP. :p

It's a pity that they couldn't have stuctured the series using 2 points of view.

Something akin to the series "The Dragon has 2 Tongues" which was a History of Wales - made about 20 years ago.

They had a couple of great presenters, each giving their version of events covered in each episode. Wynford Vaughan Thomas representing the establishment version of events, and the wonderful Gwyn Williams giving events a more radical socialist spin.

It was both informative and entertaining, as they were both such good presenters, both at an age where they had nothing to "prove" as TV personalities. Whilst their views diverged completely, they were clearly very fond of each other and could take the piss out of each other with ease.

Yeah, damn those pictures for capturing the truth, that's not supposed to happen! Next time, show them handing out candy and patting little girls on the head while they hop, skip and whistle to work like Snow White and the Seven Fucking Dwarves.

You fucking commie twat.

You really are an utter dickhead, Pete.

Even the Beeb have long since copped to the fact that the broadcasts from Orgreave were edited, and in doing so represented the miners as starting the aggro, when in fact the police did.

You fucking tory anus.

I remember that, excellent series, two very different viewpoints with Vaughan Thomas emphasising the 'nationalist' history of Wales and Williams (an old comrade of my grandads  ) arguing for a class analysis.

A comfortable, sentimental high speed race through our childhoods and teens without any apparent purpose – what was it really all about, apart from the News and Current Affairs Dept filling a content quota ?

utter bullshit

ps. are you an idiot?

Did you catch Marr's "Age of Genius" prog last night?
About Edinburgh and the enlightenment. Put across Hume's and Smith's ideas really well, without over-simplifying.

The portrayal of James Boswell as a gossiping flibbertygibbet was quite funny, too. :D

It was very good. Marr also made the point, that has been made many times, that Smith was a moral philosopher and not an economist and that his words are often conscripted by politicians to justify anything from privatisation to consumerism.

last night's was the one i liked least. i suppose it is the period that i remember most of. the 70 and 80s i found most enjoyable as i was too young to remember or understand what was going on at the time.

Yes - as you're more familiar you're aware of just how much is left out.. personally I think Marr did give his own take on things, and wasn't just trotting out the conventional line all the time.

Shame upon the BBC commissioning editors.. lost their bottle didn't they.

What's that got to do with how the historical event was portrayed on Andrew Marr's prog? Which was the point I was making.

I deny being a right wing Tory. I am a right wing Libertarian, which is a huge difference. You and Nino share more in common with the far right than I do, because I believe in empowering the individual, whereas you two want to see rights taken away from people and placed in the hands of a commie state.

Anyway - on topic, I felt last night's Marr prog was disappointing. I loved the last few showings, on the 50s, 60s 70s and 80s, they were great, but the last installment was very Westminster politics and Iraq obsessed and didn't do much social commentary or much else.

Just to add - I am being wildly and falsely labelled on the P&P forums by certain posters...I am not this consistently right wing bigot as portrayed and if such posters bothered to read my views on a plethora of other topics, they'd admit this.

Libel, eh? Can't beat it as a way of diminishing an opponent's legitimacy. :D

Pete - fascist, communist, neo-nazi boot boy, liberal handwringer, internet leftie here.. 'all welcome here..

:) :)

Oh, the irony! Here you are, accusing other people of the things that you, yourself, are guilty of. The last sentence is typical: you constantly smear your opponents.

As for your "views", they tend to be provocative statements that are designed to get people's backs up.

Didn't get to see this on clever telly, but just saw the first of the BBC2 reruns and thought it was ace. Of course it's a bit of a gloss, I'm sure it's fraught with errors, but it was informative and stimulating.
