And the current state of the UK is...?

Take a look at this article:

http://news.uk.msn.com/Fool_Britannia_A_Society_In_Denial.aspx\

Are we as bad as it suggests? Do we need a serious introspection?

"It doesn’t bode well for the future, but drug abuse isn’t the only hall of shame that Britain finds itself at the top of. The teenage pregnancy rate in the UK is the highest in Western Europe, even though pregnancy rates among under-18s are currently at their lowest for 20 years in England. In October, the Health Profile of England report showed that 23% of adults were obese, giving the UK the highest rate in Europe. In September, a study found that Britons are responsible for a third of all unsecured debt in Europe and Britons are also leading the way in Europe in the online gambling stakes, with one in three European players coming from Britain. It’s a sorry state of affairs and binge-drinking hasn’t even had a mention yet – something that everyone knows Britain does better than anyone else."

Drugs and cocaine in particular, early pregnancy, obesity, debt, gambling, binge drinking...

We have the lot. What's going on?? Are we indeed a society in denial???

Do posters refute this article, and if not, then what of our future?

The report doesn't mention cctv, but that seems to have not stopped all of the above.

What's happening to our country?
That's bad. Sounds like the average Briton is a fat, pregnant high school droupout who's on drugs.

It wan't totally serious. I think, though, that until recently we've been people who believed in things - like going to set up the New Jerusalem somewhere else, if we couldn't get it here, and the squalid cynicism of those two scumbags and their followers makes us wither and die. Yes - left to ourselves I think we are hugely creative peoples. Such a little place, so much achieved! What we could do without the grovellers!

Yes indeed. Very young.

Any contributions to the debate lock? Or are you just in sniping mode? I mean how fucking useful is it for everyone to know that you think a poster is young or very young?

Fela. Just for once. Can you accept that posting on an internet forum is an invite to anyone who wants to offer a reply? That reply, in turn, is an invitation to anyone who wants to reply to the reply. Ad infinitum. Such is internet life. Learn, my mirrored friend, to live with it.

Fair reply mate!

I quite like Peter Hitchens. Whatever you think of his politics, he strikes me as quite a decent bloke.

Melanie Phillips, on the other hand, is a complete and utter ______ (insert your own expletive here)

I like him because he cracks me up, he's also a good barometer of a certain segment of the population. Further to this, as a reactionary rightwing twat has is fairly consistant and is often as critical of the Tories as he is of the left. It's also nice knowing his fate is forever to be the brother of that other twat Christopher Hitchens!:D

you lot look at it the wrong way. so many things we're number one at!

There are indeed plenty of good things about us, very good things. But naturally there's no need to change those.

We can only change the bad in life by recognising it in the first place. By accepting that the bad is there. Then we can correct it.

Britain in my book is a society in bad need of a revamp, a remapping, a rethink.
