Anarchists arrested

I've been lured out of retirement by the prospect of violent clashes, as it says in the Evening Standard.

Just catching up with this ...

Dave Cinzano said:
Taking the story about "imitation guns" at face value right now would be akin to - for example - believing the police accounts proffered on the afternoon of 22nd July 2005 of how Jean Charles de Menezes behaved on the morning of 22nd July 2005.

"Imitation guns" could be paintball markers, super soakers, Airfix models, BB guns, airsoft toys, film props or any number of other such non-lethal items, for which there may be a reasonable (and legal) reason for having.

Already today Greeks have turned into Britons, "explosives" into fireworks. The day is still young. Seeing as the arrests stretch back to Friday, yet these key details have had to be corrected on the day the story was presented to the media nearly three days later, we may yet see more 'corrections' (though the collective memory of the earlier, more frightening, version will still linger).

In the Times tonight:

"Police in Plymouth make arrests under the Terrorism Act after flares are discovered 'by chance' ahead of summit ... The 25-year-old man was caught spraying "Antifa" on a wall, police said ... They also seized “political literature” believed to include anarchist and anti-capitalist publications ... Police have not disclosed any names although one of those detained is believed to be an international student of Greek origin."

Ho hum.

These posts show the real score with the media-presented versions of stories like this, ever changing stories with alleged details altering by the minute

WR, hope all goes well with you :)

Spraypainting a wall and owning fireworks is national news why?

And seizing 'politcal literature' doesn't exactly have favourable historical connotations does it? If I had a copy of 'The Wealth of Nations' in my house and I got nicked for graffiti, would that make the fucking Times?

This all sounds like someone needed a mountain fast but couldn't even find a fucking molehill to start from.

The sole reason for invoking the Terror powers seems to be to ensure they can be kept for questioning for longer than under the Explosives Act/PACE.
This is my suspicion, and the reason why, if we must have laws against terrorism, they shouldn't carry any extra powers. These anti-terrorism laws are starting down the road the old treason laws traveled. Scary.

Sorry I can't add much more to this, but I've only been back in Plymouth an hour.

Sounds a lot like a proposed stunt that went somewhat awry, or a plod wanting their fifteen minutes of fame, a promotion and a few more notches on their truncheon to me. Hardly the work of professionals, IMHO.

I am sure the CPS, will not make anything of the reasons why they had large amounts of fireworks, and no way would suggest anything about the possible use of the gunpowder inside the fireworks to make an explosive device, in any potential trial.

Wow, bang on the money again officer.

but what about all those people they just arrested in liverpool under terrorism charges? what did they do, send some provactive emails, make a joke about bombing racist people? The thing is with all these terrorist arrests we are not told why they are arrested and what they did, its just vague, potential might have been planning a terrorist attack.

It's not as if they clearly intended to do a terrorist attack so that we are all privy to it, the only people who are able to judge whether they are potential terrorists are the police. It's very sinister in my eyes, especially as they can now be locked up for 28 days, deprived of any sort of contact with the outside world but their accusers. At the end of that stretch wouldn't you believe that you were a terrorist because you said something or did something in a country where there is supposed to be free speech.

Sinister?

Not nearly as sinister as this comment of yours, unprovoked: http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=8974921&postcount=95

i'm still too scared too.

Putting aside the matter of your superfluous vowel for a moment, you don't have that many posts/threads to look back on. Can't see anything that isitme said to warrant that post that you made.

Now that a few people are starting to question police crowd handling tactics, wonder when people might start questioning politically timed dawn raids that are big news at the time, then never mentioned again?

If 100 people heard of the pre G20 'terrorists arrested' i doubt more than 2 of them new they were released without charge.

PLYMOUTH 5 RELEASED WITHOUT CHARGE

theres a surprise

apparantly all those arrested at ramparts after the g20 have all been released without charge as well
and breaking news!!! the sun still rises in the east.....

this was all too sadly predictable really, simply part of the propaganda machine that looks, with hindsight, like a very real case of overegging the pudding, if am allowed so many metaphors so early in the morning. i wonder if they have a case for wrongful arrest?

bump - local paper (Devon/south west) has a big cover story complete with photo of scary cache of weapons,

not at all scaremongering local paper said:
Toytown terrorists sparked global alert

THIS is the terrifying scene that confronted anti-terrorist officers in the Westcountry and sparked a global alert ahead of the G20 summit in London.
In a dingy Plymouth bedsit was stashed an arsenal of deadly weapons including an AK47 Kalashnikov rifle, a rocket launcher and a Samurai sword.
Police had raided the home of anarchist punk...after he was caught spraying anti-fascist graffiti in Plymouth city centre.
His arrest came during the days before the G20 summit in April when tensions were high and there were genuine fears of a terrorist attack.
But what they did not know as they burst through the door was that the weapons had been either deactivated or were plastic toys.

I remember this well.

I was at Ramparts when someone handed me a copy of the Evening Standard, accompanied by the words 'I think you ought to let your family know this isn't about you.'

It shit me right up until I got home and found out that it wasn't inolving anyone I knew.
