Anarchist studies Network conference 4-6th sept

Well I would rather not have to speak about the 'truth' movement at all.

The purpose of all the work we have done on this is roughly to say:

1. 9/11 'truth' is a dangerous cul de sac
2. The left/ anarchists should have nothing to do with this nonsense
3. There are some extremely unpleasant and dubious people in and around both the 9/11 and 7/7 'truth' movements

Is there any fear that the public will take up these ideas anyway? Apart from one or two nutters, I suspect most people would just laugh at their suggestions that 9-11 was an inside job.

Sadly opinion poll data implies otherwise.

Also having attended a lot of their meetings in London (I like to suffer for my art) the attendance at most would give most political organisations a stiffy for a week.

As opposed to the left and anarchist groups the public take seriously?

And what a great conference that was.

Lots of discussion, lots of new contacts, lots of ideas.

Came away feeling really proud to be in the Anarchist Ghetto.

One of the reports

:D

Jokes aside are there any reports?
This is on the Anarchist Studies website regarding the Larry O'Hara and Paul Stott discussion:

HALF TRUTH MOVEMENT - The Dangers of the 9-11 'Truth' Cult Talk by Paul Stott and Dr Larry O’Hara.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in America, a worldwide movement has developed. Its activists run thousands of websites, have produced hundreds of books, DVDs and articles, and attend events as diverse as the Notting Hill carnival, the 2005 Anarchist Bookfair, Green Party conferences and Universities and colleges across the UK. Their influence, particularly amongst young people and many British Muslims, appears to be growing.

This movement denies any link between Islamist ideology and violence, and doesn’t prioritise opposing the ‘war’ on terror. Instead the 9/11 ‘truth’ movement denies the existence of Al-Qaeda, argues American and/or Israeli ‘inside’ involvement in 9/11, and regards conventional leftist and anarchist commentators on such events (e.g. Chomsky) as ‘gatekeepers’, protecting the guilty parties from the wider public.

The 9/11 ‘truth’ movement massively distracts from the issues facing all those struggling for a better world. Surely we need to criticise the US/UK governments for what they have actually done (bad enough) rather than imaginary crimes? By seeing all contemporary (and past) political events through their skewed view of 9/11, the ‘truth’ movement takes progressive forces down a cul-de-sac. We must resist their influence.

There may be reports of the other topics.

I understand that the 9-11 Conspiraloons wanted to disrupt this event, but in the end only one person turned up.

The Truth Movement seminar was excellent. Apart from the alarming fascist sub-text I wondered how Paul and Larry managed to keep a straight face. The one Truther who turned up had an armful of "evidence" that showed the planes smashing into the towers were really holograms. He informed us that those against the Truthers were in the pay of Freemasons, who in turn payed homage to the Jews. And worse, Larry's own postcode contained the letters "XX". A dead give-away eh? Me, I spoke up for the Lizards.

The conference itself was heady mix of academics and activists. There were probably too many sessions to choose from and people hopped from one to the other. The Uni hired the upstairs room of a city-centre pub and much discussion carried on into the small hours.

Mostly though it was about making new contacts and new friends. One of the best Anarchist get-togethers in years.

I went and enjoyed it too. Nice atmosphere. It was great to have an opportunity to discuss and hear discussions on theory and historical practice. Agree with Frampton that whichever panel you attended you always missed something else you wanted to go to (I regretably missed those notorious Zionist-Free masons Paul and Larry for instance), but that just showed how much was on.

If there was any downside -- and to be honest there wasn't much that I didn't enjoy --it was the lack of any practical discussions of change within and outside universities. Shame there was no IWW or Education Workers Group panel on this. This absence was not the conference organisers fault though.

Does anyone know if the ASN is going to do anything similar again in the future?

Gosh! So I am. I think they are being a bit unfair though. I seem to be described as "some university boffin who is probably a plant". My cover is blown!

There are so many conspiracy theories around that I think we are all duty bound to adopt at least one to take as our own. I've chosen lizards because -well - I'm quite fond of them really.

If I could find a picture of a lizard wearing a bow tie I would post it up - but I can't. :(

You are not looking hard enough Mr.Marsh!

There's a noted speaker on 911 'truth' cults appearing at my local university (Glasgow university: Dumfries) on Tuesday 4th November 3pm kick off. The event is free and open to all. See front page of http://www. cc.gla.ac.uk

Please pass on my regards to him/her. And do ask what happened to the passengers on the planes.

Didn't you know, they've all been rehoused in credit crunch repossessions and had their memories erased by Will Smith and his Men In Black pen...

Top thread BTW...
