Anarchist student politics

We'd like to feature the formation of your group in our Blog.
Will you keep us posted?

The Anarchist Youth Network (UK and Ireland) only lasted for two brief years:
Check this wiki article out - it's really important - you'll see why when you read it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchist_Youth_Network

http://libcom.org/ was started by some of the former London AYN group and is an invaluable source of information and participation - alot of activists here are also there :)

This is a brilliant essay: http://www.londonclasswar.org/britishanarchism.php
In it are all the pitfalls of forming an anarchist group/network. There will be a way out of it though - i'm imagining that if one determines that the liberal/individualist side of anarchism is related only to one's own self-development/determinism, and then apply group effort to class/race/gender-struggle issues and activism at a social level, then you can have a mix of both and stay cohesive as a group, and become effective as activists without suffering the demise that the AYN experienced.
Cheers for the interest and reading material - gone through some already, will read the rest soon :).

We had a launch/social on Tuesday and are currently discussing when to hold our next meeting. There's also concerns about the student's union - whether to become an official society or not being the main issue. Most of us are leaning towards not, given the requirements it would put on the group, tho no decision has been made as yet.

One suggestion I have would be to ask each participant to choose themselves a nickname, and refer to each other as that (bit like urban75).

In all writing & speech, refer to the person by their nickname.

Yes and no.
'Yes and no' what? If you're a student you'll have to learn to answer the question put, not another one. And in this case there wasn't even a question. ;) :p

However I'm taking it that you both agree a bit and disagree a bit with the Colin Ward thing? Fair enough.

I'm a computer science student, we don't "do" grammar. but yeah, it was meant as a contracted version of "I agree and disagree". bloody pendant. :p :D

*shameless bump*

Anybody who's in uni and interested in anarchist politics could do worse than to check out the forthcoming conference on setting up a network of education workers and students.

Thread on libcom

And also - on the anti-fees demo this Sunday there is a plan for an anti-authoritarian bloc, red and black flags etc. keep an eye out if you're interested :-)

FYI

It seems the final plan is to meet at Bedford square. We'll be meeting
there around 11am, in order to meet the main demo at 12am when they
start marching.

Autonomous Students will provide a banner and a flyer (see attachment).
The main contents of the flyer have been drawn up, although minor
changes may still be made. There is space for other organisations on
it,
so gimme' a name and I'll put it on.
Feel free to bring stuff yourself (of course).

--------------------
For those that signed up at the bookfair, this is not about having a
black block on the demo, but about having an anarchist/libertarian
communist block.

We were hoping to organise an anarchist/libertarian-communist block
for the national keep the cap demonstration on the 29th of october (see
below for more details). The demo will be gathering at Malet street by
university of London Union.

The ideas for this block are the spreading of
anarchist/libertarian-communist ideas through banners, leaflets and
flags. We want to create a presence of anarchist politics,
make them a viable choice. We did not want the usual black block crowd,
but instead we wanted to show the non-violent/non-intimidating side to
our politics, based on mutual aid, self organisation and community
struggle.

worth checking exactly what SU facilities you can use without being a Soc.
in your case the SU is a source of (hopefully) discount printing, minibus transport, free (as in beer, not speech) meeting places - do you have to be a Soc to access these?
