Anarchist Groups

Better still, go and repeat the experiment.

Go to a pub. Use a clipboard to make recording the answers more easy.

Approach women. Ask 'May I ask you one quick question madame?'
Then if they say 'Yes', ask them:

'If I described a group of people to you as 'Militant' what is the first thing that springs to your mind.

I did this in the pub, and every women I asked gave one of four answers: 'armed', 'Hamas', 'Fatah', 'IRA'.

Well, that's told MORI et al.

Militant means taking up arms. When the average housewife sees the word 'militant', she think 'armed faction'. I know this from mixing with housewives.

Fatah - also described as militant. Armed struggle against occupation.
Nothing like the Visteon occupation, or striking tube workers.
I know this from mixing with Israeli-Palestinian peaceniks who use non-violent direct action (NVDA) to achieve their aims.

So it's best not to use this term to describe strikers because you will feed into a public impression of armed violence on the part of the strikers and saviour on the part of the corporation/government.

Use the term 'militant' to describe peaceful strikers at your peril. You will only help the state/corporate to create a negative impression of the strikers/redundancy-resistance in the mind of the general populace.

is this the "make it up as you go along" thread ?

Thank you for the useful (and funny) replies folks. I got some literature through the door this morning from the AF - im going to read it when i go home. The workers occupation stuff is interesting - there is actually one going on in my home town just now, and the staff have got funding to take over the company as a co-op type thing. Pretty cool.
I also got some stickers!:)
