An evening of soups

We were considering a pretentious dinner for our friends in which all the courses would be soup. We could start with a clear soup or gazpacho and then have a thicker, meaty (or vegetable) soup as a main course. But what about dessert? Any ideas?

Custard and a swirl of cheap jam, for that full cheaparse British school dinner effect.

Or perhaps there's a variation of rice pudding that you could have. There's something lovely and soothing about gluttionous rice soups like Congee. I believe there are even sweet dessert variations that you should be able to google up.

I'm sure there's a chocolate soup recipe in my Green and Black's book. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Hmmm 'pretentious dinner' ...

How about a dessert cocktail like this whisky and icecream one? You could serve it with berries, chocolates and langues de chat or similar :)

Here's another:

Espresso-Tini Dessert

Yield: 1 Serving

Ingredients:

* 3 ounces Absolut Vanilla
* One shot espresso
* 1 ounce Kahlúa
* 2 ounces Godiva White Chocolate Liquor
* 3 coffee beans to garnish

Method:
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail mixer with ice and shake vigorously. Strain liquid into a chilled 7-ounce martini glass. Garnish with three coffee beans.

Rote Gruetze (sp?) I'm sure there was a thread on here about that, how to make and so on.

Edit: Very like a Danish fruit soup I should think, just a cooler name.

Orange curry (it's liquid and served hot)
Serves 4 to 6 people

I tablespoon of butter or ghee
4 whole cloves
1 inch stick of cinnamon
¼ teaspoon cumin seeds
pinch of cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
the seeds from 2 cardomom pods
1½ pints of freshly squeezed orange juice
Heat the butter or ghee and add everything except the orange juice. Heat for a few minutes stirring continuously, then add the orange juice and cook on a low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not allow to boil. Serve hot.

From Anna Thomas's 'The Vegetarian Epicure'

Many Eastern Euro countries have variations on cherry soup, usually as a sour, savoury course, but I'm sure you could make it sweeter. Or put a swirl of dark chocolate in it.

I really recommend the orange curry, it's delicious.

oh, and I've done it without the mustard seeds because I'd run out and it was still delicious.
