an electromagnetic pulse attack on the usa could kill 90% of americans

Nuclear EMP attack is a bit far-flung.
A solar storm along the lines of the Carrington Event, however? Well that's a really quite scary proposition for modern civilisation.

I'm so glad I bought six doughnuts in lidl on my way home from work.

I figure any Irish person descended from survivors of the famine is designed to store fat for emergencies......I believe I'm a genetically enhanced economy model as I cant lose weight even on 800 cals a day and walking 5km a day.

So roll on the emp..
:D

Yeah, but us Celts aren't notoriously great at coping with even the normal rays from the sun, are we?

This is what happens by relying on technology and losing basic life skills.
See, the Luddites did have good argument!:)

Not really. 90 percent or something of people alive today would not exist if it were not for petrochems and the electric power that makes our current level of societal complexity (food production, transport, logistics, communication, industry, water treatment, disease control etc) possible.

T'was a joke old bean.:)

I thought a nuclear explosion produced an EMP pulse..

Is there an EMP device which doesn't include a nuclear explosion?

EMP attacks don't *rely* on nukes anyway do they? I thought there were more conventional methods.

The range of NNEMP weapons (non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse bombs) is much less than nuclear EMP. Nearly all NNEMP devices used as weapons require chemical explosives as their initial energy source, producing only 10−6 (one millionth) the energy of nuclear explosives of similar weight. The electromagnetic pulse from NNEMP weapons must come from within the weapon, while nuclear weapons generate EMP as a secondary effect.

IIRC an EMP attack is from a nuclear weapon detonated in low earth orbit - the EMP is the burst of radiation from the detonation itself, it is defined as the radiation emitted in the first few milliseconds. The low earth orbit means less energy deploys in blast and other affects.
The area affected is at least partially determined by the interactions with the earth's magnetic field.

The book "Dragon" by Clive Cussler covers this subject well.

Assuming they have the faintest idea where to point them or what they are doing.

I guess they will be able to figure that out with craptons of assets not in the US abd the rest of the world rather unhappy to say the least
