Amy Winehouse's new single is tops

I saw her on the Charlotte Church show a week or so ago.

I think she was due to sing 'Rehab' but they changed it to a duet with CC of 'Beat It' (Michael Jackson).

Winehouse could barely sing - or even stand up straight - and CC had to basically sing the whole thing.

I'm not sure exactly what was wrong with her, but I have seen some online comments saying she was very drunk.

If true this would be very sad in light of some of the lyrics of 'Rehab' (I never want to drink again...). For me it totally undermined the song - first time I heard it it felt like someone who has struggled through and sorted things out for themself ... something close to my heart & my own experience. Now it looks a bit like someone who is in denial and who in fact can'tsort themself out without some serious help.

I hope I'm wrong and it was just a blip - her havuing a good time and being a bit 'rock and roll', rather than someone having a very public collapse.

Good luck Amy!

Smart move by Elms yesterday getting her and her dad on together to do the listed Londoner thing - she had nothing of any interest to say and came across as completely vacuous, but her old man (a cabbie) was far more entertaining.

oh come on, that's a cop out! since when did youth=dullness?

i know, but there's also this notion that because someone makes good records they have to be fascinating people. She might not have a lot to say, but I'm not sure that makes her vacuous.

no it doesn't and i didn't hear the interview so i don't know how she came across. the fact is, i guess, that if you admire an artist for their records, you want them to be interesting aswell. it's disappointing when you find, for example, that a singer you like is an absolute prick really. that's just natural isn't it? wouldn't stop me liking the music though.

as a side note, everytime i've seen her interviewed she has come across as feisty and funny and i've liked her.:)

I heard her say nothing much on a radio interview at the weekend but she did two live songs and sounded great.

Anyway - I heard the album - it's a short one and is pretty good, one dull reggae lite tune and the rest are all fairly solid soul numbers. Rehab and the title track stood out.

I liked but I'm not "very excited indeed" about it.

I think I saw a bit of that, I was shocked about how bad it was, couldn't turn the telly off quick enough.

She does like a drink from what she was saying on the radio yesterday.

she's only 23 - how fascinating were you at that age?
That's neither here nor there because I wasn't putting myself in the public eye and nobody invited me to talk on their radio programmes. I was just giving my impression of her on the show, and she sounded to me like she was a bit shallow. I couldn't care less how old she is - and it doesn't matter - but her music gives the impression that she might be a bit more intelligent than she seemed yesterday. Perhaps she didn't want to spoil her dad's 15 mins worth.

well maybe she just prefers to let her music do the talking and was on the radio cos the record company told her to...

but the implication there is that if you do something that gets you attention - music, acting, skateboarding, self-immolation - you should have a media-friendly persona to support your talent, which isn't very fair on talented people who are otherwise awkward, shy, dull or whatever?

Also tends to be why certain people are always on TV etc, because they're up for a laugh. About 6 months ago you couldn't move for Kaiser Chiefs interviews because they generally took the piss makes good TV.

That they make average records is by the by really.

Obviously, that depends a lot on who the person is and what they do. For instance, I don't expect an inteview with Wayne Rooney to tell me anything I don't already know, and I know that all it will confirm for me is that the lad's brains are in his feet. And that's fine. But I have somewhat higher expectations of an artist and who has chosen to express themselves through words and music in a way that suggests they might have a bit of substance to their personality. But I didn't get that impression from Ms Winehouse yesterday.

i seen her around camden a few times and she's always looked the worse for wear. hair all over the place, dressed like a tramp with a filthy look on her face. maybe it should be yes to rehab but either way i liked the song. not sure it would stand up to repeated listening though.

ADD - she's tiny!

Thank you India - hey no problem!

Ah well.

Rehab's a corker thought isn't it? :)

Yeah, if you like ersatz soul for middle-class white people....

She's a good looking karaoke singer. I look forward to her first stint on a reality tv programme and her attempts to break into acting - which she will declare was always her first love anyway. :)

She's dead shaggable though. :D

I think I'm missing the point slightly with Winehouse - she sounds a bit like a drama school kid making a great impression of a 60s soul diva. Albeit with a few 'controversial' lyrics tacked on for added spice.

Not a bad voice by any means, but I'm not sure I'm that fussed by her retro appeal. Respectful, but a little dull to me.

Yepm, you're missing the point. But more than slightly :p

Spot on

I'd pass on the shag though :)
