Amy Winehouse's new single is tops

depressingly, she's claiming she stopped smoking weed - and thus stopped getting munchies - and goes to the gym instead.

Hands up who's convinced?

Thought not :(

i have given this song a few proper listens now and i love it very much indeed.

that is all :)

i don't love it very much indeed but i do like it now - it's a grower. :)

i thought she was marketing this edgy rebellious chick image though...been reading her stuff on 'looking after her man, cooking for him and keeping him close'

okaaaaayyy.... :D

Total about-turn from me on her, fucking ace Spectre-esque Motowneee record with balls.

She's cool and the album is great!

(still think the last record was shite though).

i still haven't heard it.
dub played it last night actually :D i went up and asked him if he thought he was down with the kids by playing it. (i hadn't noticed this thread before now :p).

it is a really good song - though i heard it a while ago of course ;). what isn't good however, was the article i read in the observer magazine (i don't usually read this by the way, but i was bored and surrounded by screaming teenagers at the time). her comments related to feminism were absolutely appalling. i can't even remember now but it was a most disturbing read and made me dislike her a lot.

ah. must be the same article i read, or along the same lines. the contrast between what she was saying and how she's marketing herself was quite striking. i rolled my eyes and sighed a great deal whilst reading it...

I just hate this line: I wouldn't call myself a feminist but... blah blah blah. It was definitely in there somewhere.

really? What was she saying? Can you remember?

"Men are far more straightforward. They don't dwell on things and play psychological games."

"I wouldn't say I'm a feminist"

I just hate it when people say that. If you think about what feminism is, it's like saying: I don't agree with equality for women.

And... "I like my gym because there are all these sweaty men around to gear me up and get my adrenaline going. You want to sweat and look good. When I'm in a women's gym and they see me in my standard make-up (it's my war-paint, I wear it all the time), the women look at you as if to say, 'Who are you trying to impress?' At the men's gym it's like, 'Run girl, run!' I don't mind being looked at by men, I'm competitive - anyway, every girl likes being looked at by men."

Women in the gym don't think like this imo/e.

that's not particularly controversial as far as comments on gender differences go.. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it's hardly rampant misogyny.

I just don't like this kind of message I guess.

sure, but i don't see it as being a particularly extreme comment, is all. Not compared with most of the shit you read in sleb interviews..

That "I wouldn't say I'm a feminist" statement is something that is really commonly said these days by young women. Seems to be a real problem with how feminism is perceived.

It's an insecure get-out clause.

She doesn't come across as a plank though - I think she just doesn't want to politicise herself.

Actually, there is something inside me that is a proper little housewife. I love cooking for him, even though he's a chef and knows much more about cooking than I do! I constantly want to look after people, but I've only met a couple of men in my life who deserved or appreciated it.

That's no walkover - she knows her worth.

What is wrong with that?

well as i said, i think it's in direct contrast to how she's marketing herself - and that puts me off her (not her music necessarily, although i still think she sounds like anastasia :D ).

i don't think that was actually the article i read, but it was along the same lines....very pouty and submissive girlie who's there for the men. i was quite disappointed.

i agree with dub that it's typical sleb stuff - but isn't she doing that 'i'm not the usual sleb' thang?

I really don't see how she's submissive and there for the men. That quote up there is an example and

I've never been a boyfriend kind of girl. I'm too selfish. A couple of years ago I would have said that I would end up as one of those women who lives with 20 cats and 40 piles of newspapers, but I'm thinking a bit more optimistically now because I've met someone I really like

wouldn't say I'm a feminist, but I don't like girls pretending to be stupid because it's easier. I would say that there is still more pressure put on women to look good, but I have some very vain male friends.

I mean - she's not Andrea Dworkin but...

eh?

the bit you quoted means you think she knows her worth??

or are you being sarcastic/ironic? :o

I'm not!

She says she's only had a couple of blokes who deserved that attention from her - it isn't a given that she does these things for them.

Is it because she's mentioned cooking that you don't like it? :D

what's your point? sometimes i think you have this compulsion to post just for the sake of it.

I'M ALLOWED TO DISLIKE HER COMMENTS DUB. END OF.

sorry, i'm just not getting you PieEye. we're interpreting her words differently or something.....

we'll perhaps have to agree to disagree, i wish i could remember where i read that other article tbh. she was banging on about it being her duty to 'look after her man' or something. like he was a blinkin baby.

anyway, leaving work now. have a top weekend! :)
