amy winehouse, the real thing?

I saw her live a few weeks ago. A small gig - 300 people. I was struck then by the sheer simplicity of her performance, combined with prodigious vocal talent. She really is beyond obvious - it's not about good, better, best, but simply something to do with absolutes. She's really very good, I hope she gets sorted out.

I find it so strange that famous people who are fucked up and have all the access to quality rehab, therapy and all the rest of it get all the sympathy in the world and yet the average smack head/alky/mentally ill whatever, get shunned by society and left to fucking rot when they're the ones who need the most help.

Just making an observation :)

My prediction is that she'll be over and done in a year or two.I quite like her music which isn't normally to my taste but I think the media have their knives out for her now.

I bet you love The Bell Jar as well Chesney?

the sylvia plath book? no. My favourite author is Roald Dahl and poet Austin Clarke - i like plaths husbands poem 'Tractor' too.

Ted Hugues isn't really my thing but you can't referer to him as just Plath's husband

sorry, i didnt mean it that way.

back to amy...she looks well fucked up in those pics, an ex of mine used be into self harm and his arms were full of scars from slashes. Its hard to know if Blake is a bad influence on her or they are on each other.

two addict-prone pissheads is a recipe for disaster.:(

I think she's rubbish. "Rehab", in particular, sounds more like a pastiche than the real thing. Makes me want to smash up the radio. :p

(Good luck to her in sorting out her personal problems, though.)

And that is indeed what she is, something to soothe the ears of the less discerning and discriminating ear, a very pale imitation of what she apparently tries to be.

Back to Black.

Indeed.

It might be, but it is my opinion of her music and voice.

no, it's your opinion of the people who like her music and her voice. That's the crucial difference.

For someone like me who lives and breathes music, to be told that I'm less than discerning or discriminating is a little irksome.

Dont know much about her, heard one song, and liked it a bit... but fuck the hype is a bit offputting.. i can see a new doherty in the making here. albeit one with a bit of an elvira twist....

i wish the readers of london lite many more months of intrigue! pfftttt...

I can't quite figure out why, but I simply ADORE her (and even if I knew, I wouldn't waste my time trying to justify it with some of the school-girly detractors on this thread, ie. like: "...a very pale imitation of what she apparently tries to be." Jezus. Whoever wrote that shit has no bloody idea just how hilarious that sounds if one were to apply it to lonely, amateur internet music critics  ).

Anyway, she was due to kick off her North American tour here in Vancouver last night (Aug. 25). We bought tickets about a month ago then promptly forgot about it (well, anticipating the show of course), then...

I don't keep up with UK tabloid shite much (in fact, U75 is about as close as I get :D ), but a week or two ago there were some threads/links posted here, and I honestly didn't realise just how fucked up she was. In fact, as I read on, I thought to myself: "There's no fucking way she's gonna be able to pull off this tour" and sure enough, they waited 'till the very last minute (Aug. 21) and cancelled the whole tour.

Too bad. She was sort of taking it to the next level over here (1000-3000 capacity clubs and soft-seaters, all sold out well in advance), it would've been great for her career had she been able to handle it.

I sincerely wish her all the best and hope to see her once she gets it all sorted.

That's what I thought roughly,

But my only experience of amy winehouse was watching a bit of glastonbury on the tv which isn't an ideal way to form an opinion, - but I saw kasabian, (first listen) who even on the tv sounded like an awesome psychedelic rock band, followed by winehouse, who just sounded like insipid rnb to me. But tbh, my dislike was increased by the fact that I couldn't help getting the impression that she was doing a poor takeoff of shinri, - linked to above. -post 43

Would be interesting to see her do a "back to basics" [60's] R&B/soul album some time...
The girl can sing, no doubt about that.

I woke up to that waste-of-licence-fee Victoria Derbyshire on Five Live talking to Blake's parents; seems the whole show this morning is about Amy/addiction.
Not sure what to think about Amy Winehouse but I'm off to give Derbyshire some shit on the 5 Live board though it seems she's already getting it plenty.
Was just way more crass than commercial local radio.
Derbsyhore does an apparently concerned and sympathetic tone to talk to Blake Thingy's parents and then, bang on comes the news and they lift one line from the whole thing saying the parents suggest it's time to boycott Amy Winehouse records which isn't what they said really.

I heard that - Derbyshire was audibley salivating over the prospect of that soundbite. She's bloody awful - took the niave parents right in.

I heard that too - she was being a manipulative bitch trying to get as much dirt off people who were clearly pretty distressed about it all but I guess went public to try and bully them into getting some help (I hope). I switched off after about 10 minutes as it was winding me up
