Amicus (section of Unite) Gen Sec election

yeah, just noticed that the first article is by the Guardians Westminster correspondent, rather than their labour one.

Wonder if it came from 'one of the Unite-supporting Labour MP's who have switched to Coyne' by any remote chance

Does it have a "Labour" correspondent? (Like just about all other media) It has axed the position of "industrial correspondent" which reported on union issues.

Milne was the industrial hack, but they axed that position - I guess he would normally be the one to cover these kind of issues though...

that's a damned good vote for hicks, surprised reuter got so many.

Simpson will probably still be gloating like a pig tho

Maybe, but he spent a fortune in our subs to secure it. His suporters in the gazette were still nervous last night and told me a vote for Hicks was a vote for Coyne!

That's the danger, Simpson thinking this is some kind of mandate. The Executive meets next week, and they'll have to slap him down at he earliest opportunity.

not something you'll be arguing about the very few liberal MEP's who get elected on a smaller percentage come June

But far more MEPs than the left/far-left, whose participation in the polls will rob the Green Party of seats in London and the South East.

he can't really get too cocky when 95% of the membership failed to vote for him
Simpson's contempt for the membership will continue unabated. He has no right to be cocky; yet, this hasn't stopped him in the past.

The only way to stop his cockiness is for the Executive to check his excesses during the remainder of his tenure in office.

88% of Unite's eligible members could not be bothered to vote.

Not quite "speaking for the workers" if so few voted....

A small point of correction, liampreston, this was not a Unite election; no, it was an election for the GS position in the Amicus section of Unite.

Simpson, 60048, (37.85%)
Hicks, 39307, (24.84%)
Coyne, 30603, (19.34%)
Reuter, 28283 (17.87%)

Poor turnout - but a poorer result for Simpson and a good one for Hicks

Worst of all for Coyne, will be a big blow to any hope he might have held for leading the union once the full merger is completed.

Which can't be a bad thing.

lets hope Jerry takes the hint and goes for it in 2010 :) - considering simpson had the weight of control of the union heirarchy - the concerted campaign (waste of my and all other members money...) and the dirty letter that went out with the ballot papers - its an impressive result for hicks

those who backed faircloth should be eating their words about now

shame that 88% of members are so turned off of activity or even elections that they didn't vote.

I heard about it this afternoon; although, there was much speculation as to who leaked what well before the election result was announced.
