American High School Movies

Saved   Christian rebellion and high school!

Andif we're streching the definition:

Igby Goes Down
Pieces of April

The Lords of Flatbush (1974)...?

Not sure if this counts cos they're all dropouts from highschool...

It's like "What Happened Next" for the kids from Grease

Mean Girls!

Although I have to say I love John Hughes 80's movies. Some Kind of Wonderful is one of my most favourite films EVAR!

Fact: twisted kitten once opened a set with that cheer from Bring it On

My wife loves bring it on and told me the other night she nearly bought the DVD for my birthday.

I'm glad she got me madagasgar instead.

No mention of Pump up the Volume??

Christian Slater as a pirate radio DJ upsetting the powers that be.

You beat me to it. Pump Up the Volume is only the high school I've seen that comes close to capturing my own experience of it. The film particularly hits the nail on the head with the oppressive management, obsession with SAT scores and baby boomer parents who've sold out by the 80s.

Sadly the film massively underperformed when it was released, think the title, Christian Slater image and bad marketing meant that few people realised what a gem this is -- remains one of my top ten films of all time :D

---

Has anyone seen The River's Edge? It's a quite dark teen flick that left a strong impression on me as a teenager. I've been trying to track it down and see if it holds the test of time...

Yes, American high schools really do have long hallways made up of lockers. Kids in the UK luckily don't have to carry as many books around with them, us teachers hoard them instead!

post-high school, i reckon. I could lend you the VHS, it's a damn fine film, even if everyone acting in it appears to be called Corey.

The mighty Kitten stikes! I bet no fucker knew what you were doing apart from yourselves either :D

Dub - I'm getting Bring it On out for us. It's great.

Pump Up the Volume made me love Christian Slater - AND it has a pirate radio broadcast from the back of a jeep!

Only Americans can do this.

Heartbreak High anyone? When Aussies try it jumps the shark from the very first episode (never mind the cocking film)

When we do it we get Grange Hill - can anyone picture Tucker Jenkins and Roland at Rydell High? Didn't think so :(

What wrong with you

Heartbreak High was fucking ace, especially the first season with Rivers, Con and all

Would John Waters' "Cry Baby" count as a High School movie?
Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake and Traci Lords.

Bring It On? Mean Girls? What are you people on!

Here is my list:

Brick
Dazed and Confused
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Pump up the Volume
Heathers
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Thirteen
Bully

Oh I watched it. All of it.

But you cannot deny there was something inherently wrong with it can you? Like it was trying to ape american high school drama without really being able to.

Come on - it was really, really shit with really, really bad acting and some of the most unconvincing baddies ever.

What about the Principal? The unfunny and alive Belushi brother 'cleans up' a rough inner city school, whilst riding a motorbike.

Its shit, but its definitely high school.

And theres the wanderers, thats kinda high school. "Don't fuck with the wongs"
