Yes but I can think of at least 20 places locally that sells Scotch Bonnets. We don't subsist on beef and spuds anymore.

OMG I had forgotten about those

I was always too frightened to taste it. I bought some American cheese once to see what it was like. It was horrid.

When I go to a french restaurant, I'll often have the cheese tray for dessert. When I go to the cheese store, I'll buy Balderson's Aged Cheddar, as well as Stilton, feta, gouda, etc.

But when we're driving around and just want a snack, sometimes we'll buy a plate of nachos and drench them in hot liquid cheese.

It's ok to do both or all those things.

And Mrs. M: next time, tell your friends to bring you back some good aged canadian cheddar.

Oh, go ahead and try it. It won't kill you, and it only costs $2.50.

i think i would prefer a few chunks of that good canadian chedder. it is rather nice. imo, it's better than several other imported chedders we can get here

I like it too, but if you're in the 7-11 and hungry for some junk food, that hot cheese squirted all over a plate of nachos really hits the spot, especially if washed down by a Slurpee or a Big Gulp.

America, Canada, Australia, etc are all a bit held back by unpasteurised cheese being illegal.. doesn't help!
This is the most appalling thing I have ever read on suburban. Even worse than tales of cat puke or vermin infestation.

Our government takes great strides to protect our health.

Until recently, even unpasteurized beer couldn't be sold here.

I'm serious toggle. I bet the cumulative affect of fat and salt (I'm scared to imagine what else is in it) in American 'cheese' causes more health problems than the remote possibility of unfriendly bacteria in unpasteurised cheese.

Melted cheese is great. Especially over raw onions on toast.

I was going to offer to tell you about treating my infected rabbit...but I guess even that only lasted a few months... :p

oh yes, i'm mainly amused by the concept that unpasturised cheese is considered more of a danger than the levels of additives put into processed foods.

i can remember the taste of that melted cheese stuff, it really is something else entirely, the only way i can really describe it is as the sort of cheesy smell of someone who is really rather ill and hasn't been able to wash recently.

This is the height of chauvinism: turning one's nose up at the way one country's bacteria reacts with milk...

Yep. It is.

I can't even go to Suburban to get away from it any more. And they claim they arn't nationalistic!

:(

All the good cheese I had in America was imported. I went into a fancy pants deli in California and was asked if I wanted to try cheese from Neal's Yard in London! I tried Monterey Jack but it was bland and tasteless.

Does anybody ever get ill from eating unpasteurised cheese? Also I assume you can sell it in restaurants, because I had some epoisse (excellent, stinky French cheese) in a restaurant in New Orleans. Unfortunately they had no idea how to serve it and it was chilled straight from the fridge, "because otherwise it runs all over the place". I told them they had to acclimatise it in future -- it should be runny, dammit!

I think it's the fact that you're not allowed to sell unpasteurised cheese that's part of the problem.

Not really, i'll give credit where credit is due, I've had great US microbrewery beers, i'm rather fond of calafornian wines, however most Us cheese is rank.

They tell you in the UK not to eat it if you're pregnant as you can get listeria from it. There is no such advice in France though.
