Yeh first time I watched it it blew me away, second time was watchable, but now I just don't care about it. I don't think it's lived the test of time like other films of it's era have. :hmm:

I agree with Zenie.

Not a timeless film, won't be remembered in 20 years as a great piece of cinematography. Just in the 99p bin at your local tescos or whatever.

Which makes it crap when it's all said and done.

( i love it when it 1st came out, thought oh, groundbreaking blah blah,...but it aint, its just cack really...)

yup. all this.

i feel this way about 'lost in translation' too.

Wait, I'll say more.

Good - very - but not great. Well-written, superbly-acted.

Very, very enjoyable on its own terms without being particularly 'meaningful'. If it was a message film I'm unsure what the message was.

It knocked me out the first time I saw it, but it does start to look weaker on repeated viewing, but still really well executed - I'll have to defer to more filmic types as to whether it is derivative, but not crap.

It sounds dreadful - but then it's a mainstream film made in the past 20 years and has the words "American" and "Beauty" in the title.

Since it seems to have inspired so much debate on the other thread...

I have to admit it's a long time since I saw it, and it blew me away at the time, but that said, I've watched a hell of a lot more indie type films since then, and I'm not sure if I would be quite so impressed by it now. But I'm still going to go for 'not crap'...

Argh bollocks - forgot to tick 'poll'.

I thought it was fabulous first time, and maybe even up till the 10th time I saw it. But it's just one of those flicks that just keep reappearing and reappearing in my life and I don't know why...same with that Sean Connery one "The Rock"

That's what I thought! The title put me off viewing it for years. I thought it was going to be about some ex-beauty queen or something who discovers previously-untapped reserves of inner-strength when she contracts syphilis.

It's not though. Watch it. It's very good. :)

Thought it was great when it came out, but I was pretty young.

It's shit for reasons already explained.

I think it was marketed as a message film that says something profound about American society. Passed me by if that was the intention though.

It did. It said that American society is not absoloutely perfect in every respect. That caused a major controversy.
