Indeed. They need to pay their rent to the PRS.

Surely it'd depend on the money trail?

All upstanding pubs/clubs should have a PRS license of course, so my earlier 'crooks' comment was way out of context :)

But if you tried to play music, say, on a street corner, then that would be a no-no.

For pubs, the recorded music license, per event is

First 100 capacity £7.62
Each additional 25 capacity £1.93

(background music/jukeboxes are covered under an annual license of £100-300 depending on venue size and entertainment type)

Does that mean that young people playing MP3s on their tinny mobile telephones on the omnibus are not just engaging in anti-social behaviour but copyright infringement too?

Oh dear!

You're buying a transfer of a licence that was paid for in full with the original sale.

yeah but essentially it makes no difference to the artist (or their record company) they see no extra money, infact the other person might as well just give you the copy from their perspective. So lets imagine file sharing as someone buying a CD then selling it on for nothing but when they go back to their CD rack the album is still there.

I wouldn't pay more than 10p a track. Anything else is just being used to finance people like Bono, Simon Cowell and the drug addictions of idiots.

they make music for their own enjoyment, if they can convince some mugs to pay them for it then grand, if some mugs want to pay me to enjoy myself as an 'artisit' then fair fucks.

And as a communist I don't give a fuck about people getting paid for creating music, i've also got loads of mates in bands who've never been able to make a living off their music and who still do it.
I don't earn anywhere close enough to start giving two fucks about some musician types and it certainly ain't my job to worry about the little mites income.

Anyway most artists make their money of gigs and merch.
Isn't it a bit contradictory to want musicians to make a living from material goods (ie merch) per se? As opposed to the actual music?

well the facts are that i don't pay for music cos I don't have to but if I want a t shirt or to see them live I have to pay. Thats the reality of it.

ok, thanks...but if i don't get it you'll tell me yes :)

i'll see if my tiny little woman mind can work it out by then. :D

what's your gender got to do with it, prior to you mentioning it there i'd no notion whether you had a cock, fanny or mangina.

Now stop playing the passive aggressive fuckwit and get your thinking cap on cos i really can't be arsed explaining something so simple.

gender hasnt got anything to do with it, off the cuff comment...

well, i guess what you mean is that you love music but hate capitalism.

love the abuse though.

*shivers*

Now, could you elaborate on your supposed 'right' to own the hard work of musicians for free please? What right is that then?

I'll play on this one: humanity deserves to have free access to culture- the fruits of culture should not be denied to anyone. So, not 'rights' per se, but you get the idea.

eh no I mean i actually hate musicians, generally speaking a bigger set of self important gobshites one is not likely to meet, excpet perahps top level footballers but then again atleast top level footballers have proved their ability rather than being up their own hole and playing the unappreciated artist card.*

* yes this is a sweeping generalisation so don't bother pointing out exceptions etc.

But should musicians be condemned to get nothing back from all the hours of hard work, practice and dedication they put in while every one else is personally benefiting from their creativity?

It all seems a bit one-way and unfair to me. They've giving you something that enriches your life, yet you're telling them to fuck off when they look for something in return.

Surely we should be encouraging and rewarding people who make our lives better?

Yep. Definitely got issues. Jealousy, perhaps?

nah i know a good few folk who play in bands and shit and they are sound, the one's who call themselves musicians however... It might be jealousy if these muscians were actually successful, however they are mostly small fry who imagine themselves unappreciated genuis's.
