Anyone want to setup an independant site then?

May just do it myself, only working part time at the moment so I have the time.

with the detail that DPreview had??

yer on hidiing to nuthing there.

Yeah, it is easier than you think. I've helped out and done a couple of sites that are massive, drowned in sound, radiohead.com, SWAG (when it was still going). The hardest part is sustainin it because it does get very fucking boring :D

I am not saying I alone could match dpreview but it is easier than you think to do. One of the biggest pulling features to a website IME is a community and a good quality large images, easy navigation and a good use of white space. The content is almost secondary - people won't read it no matter how good it is if you're website is a mess.

But if you're not on the camera company's PR radar, you wont get the cameras to review in the first place which would put any review site at a massive disadvantage!

And even if you do get the cameras, you'll generally get them a lot later than everyone else.

All the Sony, Canon and Nikon camera reviews I've done have been on cameras I've owned/personally borrowed because the fuckers completely ignore my requests for review models - even if some of my reviews end up ranking very highly in Google.

Not being an arse here, but how are you selling Urban to the PR people? High Google ranking, big reviews...the only thing I can think of is that there isn't much sales potential but that's an easy objection to overcome or there's another criteria that you aren't meeting to get the review kit.

If you wanna PM me maybe? Or Wrysmile - she's proper evil PR...

Everything starts from little acorns being eclipsed by mighty oaks. I personally think if you put enough effort into it, urban75, coupled with its photography forum, massive gallery and the kind of people who come post here (a largely ABC demographic I bet), you could start a ball rolling.

You're in a better position than anyone here!

I won't be bothering with dpreview as much- imdb was great until it turned into an amazon bootlick.

Google is another company that worries me (slight derail but with comparisons), they are the best known search engine, and with Picassa, being a very popular image filing and editing program along with their ownership of myspace they will soon be bigger than Microsoft.

I thought Murdoch owned MySpace?

He does. Google bought YouTube.

Bigger than MS...interesting one really. MS' business model is based around building and selling product, whereas Googles revenue model is based around PPC ads and royalties from licensing Google search to 3rd parties (i.e. those that use Google as their website search engine) and their other online applications (you can use Google calendar on a commercial website but you pay a fee for it).

Googles model ONLY works so long as ad revenues maintain both yields (Cost Per Click) and volumes - if someone comes up with a better Search or better model for ad revenue Google could find themselves in trouble.

So they could be as big but in a different way.

Right got it, Google bought YouTube not Myspace. I had forgotten about Murdoch. I wonder what else he will gobble up on the internet.

Quite sure, there was nothing else like it over a decade a go, and was put together by reviewers who had a bit of a brain. Read some of the reviews and things on it today... its like readin the Mirror's FREE MAY FILM GUIDE.
