Amazon & alt. providers during strikes (was:Royal Mail loses £25m Amazon contract)

I hope they lose all their contracts and then the strikers will look really fucking clever.

Royal Mail have shot themselves in the foot with this one, shame they lost the contract as it is a lot easier getting stuff delivered by RM as if not at home can pick up deliveries at the local postal depo, rather than have to wait around for a courier.

most of the stuff i order from amazon comes from DHL anyway.

This means if I am not in when they deliver it I don't have to go to a sorting office in Salford (about 10 minutes away) to pick it up. I have to go to FUCKING WARRINGTON about 40 minutes on the motorway and I dont have a car. As far as I am concerned royal mail never had the contract.

it's a bit shit cos this will fuck the rm as people follow amazon's lead. otoh it will mean an end to finding amazon stuff left outside my front door

They don't want the Royal Mail to continue. The point is to wreck it. It's already been deliberately run down so that the "business is uneconomical", by selling off the bits which might have made it economical.

edit: to make clear, "they" here isn't Amazon of course, it's RM management and the government

So instead of the sorting office 15 mins walk away I'll have to go to fucking BAMBER BRIDGE to collect amazon parcels. I HATE Bamber Bridge. It's shit.

Thats exactly what I hear from postie friends. Deliberate sabotage.

I sort of know someone inside Whitehall, and they say that if the Tories win they will fully privatise whats left of Royal Mail. Thats one policy Honest George Osbourne didnt menion today.

What with little love coming from Labour, I fear these strikes are the last throw of the dice for the post as we know it. Could be a miners strike II.

Would it though? Most post that comes through is either bills or ads. And when its privatised the new companies would need experienced staff. So the actual 'man in the street' wouldnt be that bothered would they? It would be small businesses affected, and so in turn they would go to the cheapest/most helpful service provider.

When Adam Crozier took over years ago it was widely acknowledged that the influx of European competition would impact on the RM.. When I was there I was in a high level meeting, and I asked why they were concentrating on securing contracts with big companies (the ones that spend hundreds of thousands a month on post - BT, Amazon, catalogue companies blah.) but doing by discounting the price.

I pointed out that it wasnt a sustainable business model to cut your costs to stop competitors getting in, if your infrastructure or your long term growth plans were non existent. That you had to improve service and make sure that you were the best at what you do, despite the attentions of Deutchse Post etc. That the RM was an institution and had the support of all people (not least as it was a massive employer). And to do all this on a contract that wasnt even enforcable. But meh.

I was about 25 at the time. I got made redundant about 72 hours after pointing this out.

You don't want to question political decisions to phase out an public service in favour of private industry. I hope you learned from that.

My Royal mail post these days mainly consists of of utility bills.

Whatever happenned to the paperless society, well I guess that it has not arrived is a boon for the royal mail cause if it had arrived they would be finished.

But what did happen to the paperless society?

Not sure its just RM who have shot themselves in the foot, if you're a smaller online retailer I'd be surprised if you didn't think it would be a good idea to jump as well. Fewer parcels = less jobs.

Fuck Amazon.

£25 million? Royal Mail has a turnover of £9 Billion.

We should refuse to deliver any of their crap. This is just scare tactics bollocks.

Amazon need us postal workers but we dont need them. They would be bankrupt in weeks without us.

Corrected. Amazon can fuck off with their scare tactics. I can't be fucked to drive to Rotherham to pick up a parcel when the royal mail sorting office is at the end of my street. I'll inform Amazon accordingly.

A "bang on the money" post.

Again,"bang on the money",post.

If they don't like it they can fuck off !
(and people can choose to refuse Amazon.)

If post isn't delivered, the sorting office is two bus stops away. If it comes with a parcel courier and I'm not in, I have to go all the way from Brixton to Wimbledon.

I suppose nobody here thinks of the obvious of 'just get it delivered to work' - thats what I do with anything I know will need a signature, or won't fit through the letterbox.

Exactly. Anyone criticising the strikers should be aware that this is management policy and either way, it's win-win for them. Whether the staff quietly capitulate or strike themselves into defeat, it's all the same to them.

I don't have that option, not having a regular daily workplace, so I'm often a prisoner, held captive by the vague possibility the courier might turn up.

Like others I prefer RM for deliveries because they can be collected from either the baby post offices, 9-5 only, or the sorting office before 1pm. Hardly the most convenient opening hours but far better than a trip to Wimbledon.

What continues to amaze me is that the local newsagent type shops still haven't cottoned on to the fact that courier deliveries have become a major issue for huge numbers of people. If they'd offer a secure drop off & collect for maybe 50p per parcel I reckon they'd boost their trade by dozens of people a week. But I've been saying this for nigh on a decade and they just will not listen!

um, who else will deliver amazon stuff? I have only ever seen post office delivery people round here? How does that work then
