Am I getting old/out of touch?

an interesting thing about the charts is that they don't count old records - otherwise the dark side of the moon would be number one for ever.....

I've just found out that a tune called Umbrella by Rhianna has been number 1 for 10 weeks, yet I've not heard of it AFAIK. Does this mean I'm too old?

First I've heard of it. I thought Rhianna was a Fleetwood Mac song ? :(

Haven't followed what's in the charts for 15 years now. Most of it is crap anyway and doesn't really interest me.

Don't worry!

All charts suck....
MTV is evil...
It's nice being so out of touch you're actually at the forefront of whats hot!

That can't be true, can it? (either assertion).

I reckon it's about right - obviously that album or some beatles tunes have outsold any current number ones by a massive amount.....

Yeah but not every week?

It's not the top 40 albums ever, every week. It would pretty much be the same chart every week.

And at number one (again  ) Thriller (or whatever the top selling album of all time is now).

No but them old albulms do still shift thousands a week. Not enough to get into the top 10 of course.

I suppose my point is that the charts are fairly meaningless really........the only people who buy cd singles are teenage girls.....

It isnt, though dark side of the moon did stay in the US top 75 for something ridiculous like 25 years (this is partly due to its relaease in new formats cd etc and new special editions)

not sure about that - anyone got any more hard data? My gut feeling would be that the dark side of the moon or thriller probably still outsells most chart hits.....

Here it is.

it's all about jay-z for the first bit though, i kept thinking i had the wrong song... anyway, it's not very good. of the type it seems nowhere near as catchy as any number of destiny's child tracks (and i know that's a while ago, but i too am old.)

anyway, she has a very good body, and wears a very skimpy leather outfit. is that the appeal?

Nah, trust me mate they wouldn't.

Single sales have plummeted in the past 10 years but album sales haven't been hit as hard. A number one albulm would be expecting to get around 100,000 sales a week whereas Thriller of DSOTM would get a few thousand at the most.

It amazes me that people are still buying those albums in their thousands.

Not only have I heard it, I've also heard the cover version by Biffy Clyro. :o

It's irritatingly catchy and the ella bit got stuck in my head for ages

I think I pretty much only ever hear snatches of singles in shops or on teenagers' mobiles these days.

I've never been a singles buyer anyway, or particularly in touch, come to mention it.

:)

Oh fuck thats annoying.
I'm off to put on a Fats Waller 78 I bought the other day. :)

The Sheffield bassline one is a bit yuck really (Big Ang?). Seamus Haji has a remix out, it's kind of standard and clumsy too.

This is EXACTLY what I said to my wife last night.I think she was watching Big Brother and it was mentioned.I don't think we're missing much Orang Utan :p

Not again, please!!

You are getting old when the hit of the moment is a cover that was a hit in the 60's 70's 80's and 90's.Once again the girl/boy band has completely ruined the original song. :D
