Am I an Indie Kid?

3w4534w53

Okay, acts that "progressive" indie kids always say they like.

hip-hop - Eminem
grime - Dizzee Rascal
pop - Sugababes (with dashes of Girls Aloud)
post-rock - Mogwai, Sigur Ros and Godspeed
"electronica" - Aphex and Squarepusher.

That's not 'progressive', that's 'token'. ;)

Go me.

hip-hop - Eminem Not as good as he was, actively dislike at this point
grime - Dizzee Rascal One of the better things Epona plays :o
pop - Sugababes (with dashes of Girls Aloud) Hmmmm.... No!
post-rock - Mogwai, Sigur Ros and Godspeed Yes, yes and thrice yes :)
"electronica" - Aphex and Squarepusher. LOving Aphex :o

Okay, acts that "progressive" people (or whatever) always say they like.

punk - The Clash
post-punk - Gang Of Four
contemporay rock - The White Stripes
hip-hop - Outkast
regaae - Bob Marley

Its pretty easy to pick the leading lights of a genre.................

:p

punk - The Clash Love 'em
post-punk - Gang Of Four Hmmmm... Okay
contemporay rock - The White Stripes Once good, now sell-out shite
hip-hop - Outkast There is much better hip-hop imho
reggae - Bob Marley Should have given up after Simmer down, prefer Ska :p

Its so silly to say that its just token or whatever.
As i think my post above proves (or tried to prove) you can do the same thing with most genres of music...
There are just some artists that have something that most people like.
Doesnt make it token. Or just for indie kids. Its just - like - a thing.

Heh.

True say.

but I do like confield

:p

and I own a kitchens of distinction record

:p :p

I am your target audience.... (what a tremendous name for an album...)

What does it matter if yr an indie kid or not.

I would have thought everyone knew genres are evil inventions, meant only to divide us and sell magazines...

and that the choice of music in the Nathan Barley sex scene is the single funniest thing in the world since Alan Partridge said "no way you big spastic - you're a mentalist"

as you were.

yeah exactly, i was fighting prejudice with prejudice by using it the term i suppose :)

and confield is good obviously, although not exactly likeable

Get all the Stooges albums (3), and get the bootleg album that has 'I Gotta Right' plus the best Kill City tracks (Johanna, Sell Your Love). Might as well get Idiot/Lust For Life albums too - essential in their own way.

The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour, plus I absolutely love Shiftwork which came later, and is a perfect marriage between Fall quirkiness and sublime pop songwriting.

Can - have a crack at Tago Mago.

No Velvet Underground??

And Ege Bamyasi. :)

I might have to give that one a try, got into tago mago a while back but haven't really "got" other CAN albums I've tried. Just love the way tago mago starts with relativey normal 3 minute long songs then goes into 20 minute epics featuring the sound of an egg whisk and someone going aaaaaaaaaaaaawoooooooooooooooo

Indie doesn't really exist anymore - certainly not like it did in 1986, anyway, which was when the term was defined and became a byword for scuzzily-produced guitar shamblers, due to the prevailing trends of major label signings at that time specifically excluding those sorts of bands, necessitating them to find independent platforms for their music.

There aren't many truly independent labels left now, and being an indie kid in the 'traditional' mould these days would mean being into Arctic Monkeys at one end of the scale (although they are more of a welcome aberration in the current climate) and Tunng at the other, and...well, not very much else really. Most genuinely independently distributed music tends to be of the left-field techno/d'n'b/grime/glitch/etc. and electronica variety.

I will never understand the logic of industry wankers who see Coldplay and Athlete and the like as indie. If these bands are indie, who is the mainstream? Michael Bolton FFS? Coldplay and Athlete make U2 look indie as far as I'm concerned. And Kaiser Chiefs are not indie. Maximo Park are not indie. Hard-Fi are not indie. Blur and Radiohead are not, and never have been, indie.

The Legend was indie. The Smiths were indie. The Dave Howard Singers were indie. HMHB were indie.
