"Alternative" Hip-Hop recommendations

biggie has the better flow and swing to his stuff. 2pac is much better lyriclly and had better beats behind him. I personally rate 2pac higher then biggie but can understand if people think biggie is better but to call2pac shit is just plain silly. he is one of the greatest mcs to ever garce the mic and genuinely had something to say and wanted better for people where as biggie just commented on what was going on.

My point was that regardless of their talent, their deaths give them a martyr status which is highly marketable and hence they maybe get pushed to deity levels ahead of still living artists who are just as good.

I have mostly been listening to:

Wu Tang - Enter the Wu Tang/36 Chambers

Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
Ghostface Killah - More Fish

I know I have previously stated my dislike for "Gunz & byatches & Macho bullshit" hip-hop and some of the above comes a little too close for comfort, but:

a) I have a sneaky feeling that a lot of it is a little more tongue-in-cheek than it would first seem and
b) They are all fucking ace albums. Especially 36 Chambers.

Oh - but!

I hate the fucking skits.

A message to all musicians everywhere:

NO FUCKING SKITS - JUST STOP IT!

They really are nowhere near as funny/insightful/entertaining as you seem to think they are, so play the damn music and leave the skits well alone.

I like the jazzy, the funky, the experimental, the interesting and the weird

Eyedea & Abilities (E&A) ticks all those boxes & they're one of the few hip-hop acts that consistently wont bore me after the first few spins.

Woo!

It just so happens that Jurassic 5 are playing in NZ when we are visiting next month - just got tickets!

Finally - my gig drought ends.

Stupid Dubai and it's stupid non-existing music scene.

yup, crackin'

had never heard of them before I seen them live at Electric Picnic in the summer.

Dunno if they've been mentioned but Terra Firma and Seven Star are both pretty good. In fact Seven Star are AMAZING, one of my best 'finds' recently (thank you Boomkat!)

Bang on - I fucking love Aesop - Labour Days is my favourite hip hop album ever without a doubt.

Took the mofoing words right out of my mouth. Some of his lyrics get you stoned without the toke!

Aesop's last couple of releases have been pretty crap on the whole though. Mind you, Fishtales was a banger so I hope this year's album will sound like that.

Labor Days is a bonafide gem though, definitely.

can't believe theres been hardly any uk hip hop mentioned on this thread other than roots manuva...

:D

anyway - u.k - task force, klashnekoff, braintax, skinnyman, jesht

u.s - dabrye, jedi mind tricks, ghostface, talib kweli, pharoahe monch

Taz - Analyze This - found it again recently, banged it out last night and it's a superb album, very very good and quite surprising that it didn't do more imo. Check it out.

Yes to taz! awesome album. The reason it flopped is beacuse def jam did no marketuing on it at all anywhere.

My favorite uk hip hop album. Taz should have been massive.

i hadn't picked up that it was on Def Jam until you pointed that out (got it on cd and the logois hid well away, i was dazzled by the special edition sticker on the front :D). Fucking hell, that really does make it unforgiveable that it wasn't massive. The man has got some skills and the tunes are light years on, its proper class music.
