"Alternative" Hip-Hop recommendations

backpacker is just stuff that isn't agressive isn't gangsta, bitches and crack, its more of the common, mos def stuff, a lot of metaphores and probbaley talk about mars and planets and other abstract things will feature somewhere.

Its basicly consious hip hop that isn't political and rowdy, although obviously artists can be both or all three.

I thought it was more the noodly, muso-esque stuff.

What you're talking about is "underground". Or "alternative". Or...

[/genre fascism silliness]

:D

i thought they sounded well lame when i saw em last year - like they wanted to be the industrial boo-ya tribe or something. granted, they may be better on record, but live they were shite.

s'pose that's often the case though...

OK.... the album rocks harder than the bastard child of Sonic Youth and Public Enemy on ten grams of speed, though...

Were Disposable Heroes backpacker hiphop then? Or stuff like Arrested Development?

dont really know either of them to be honest. Wouldn't be shocked if arrested development were back packer though but can only think of that back to life tune of theres.

Back To Life was Soul II Soul, surely? And Arrested Development were somewhere between pop and Native Tongues style hip hop, definitely not backpack

Buck '65 is probably the best example I can think of...

Mos Def n'all that are not.

Arrested Development's biggest hits were Everyday People and Mr Wendell.

My mate looks just like Speech, it's quite randomly surprising.

I fear I will always be in the minority on U75 by prefering the gunz 'n' hoes approach to the somewhat more righteous artists.

*sigh*

Now if you excuse me I'm off blow sum shit out yo' bitch asses. Beeeeatch.

I am not denying there are some great tracks in that genre, as far as the beats, tunes and lyrical flow/delivery go.

I find that the lyrics and the attitude alienate me these days - It just grates and I can't get past that to enjoy the music.

I don't have any need or time for that kind of bullshit macho posturing and I no longer have anyone to rebel against or indeed to tell me to "turn that rubbish down!" so it kind of loses any appeal it once had.

I must be getting old

:(

I think that gangster rap takes itself far too seriously most of the time, it's almost become a parody of itself.

I listen to hip hop for the beats mainly anway, gangster rap just seems to be all about a bullshit attitude.

Yeah, that was good, but his last one - the Beautiful Struggle - was really disappointing.
Yup it was, I think that was his effort to 'go commercial'. I hope he's learnt his lesson and doesn't become a sell out, he's too good for that.

Grokey which tracks did you download? He has a commercial sound on some songs but his lyrics are totally different to anyone else IMO.

I guess I just like the posturing, I find it quite amusing sometimes, cleverly vivid others in the way it conjures imagery, however real it may be. In terms of whether they're nice guys, I guess the view I take is similar to the fact that just because he makes certain films it doesn't mean Martin Scorcese is in the Mafia. And the hip hop isn't necessarily have to be gangster. Very often stuff I like is just about how great they are, be it financially, musically or with the women.

As for backpacker hip hop, it all sounds very camp to me. ;)

That album is a corker as well.

I heart Aesop Rock most of all of hippity hopsters I think. Quite honestly I am in awe of him. He's not the most happy of chaps though.

Am really enjoying Bazooka Tooth.

It wasn't until I Wiki'd him that I realised he was a geeky white-boy of Jewish descent!!!
