"Alternative" Hip-Hop recommendations

Cadence, Code Red, Ghostface, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, Psalm One, Boot Camp Clik, Cunninlynguists, Oh No...

:)

I fear I will always be in the minority on U75 by prefering the gunz 'n' hoes approach to the somewhat more righteous artists.

*sigh*

Now if you excuse me I'm off blow sum shit out yo' bitch asses. Beeeeatch.

DJ Vadim is quite good (Ninja Tunes) in a Russian/UK political hip-hop sorta way - check out 'USSR: Life From The Other Side'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Vadim

I have one of his tracks on the Zen Ninja Tune complication - I like that one, so I will give the rest a go!

ETA: I was going to correct my spelling, but I think I like "Zen Ninja Tune Complication" better than the intended.

Favourite this year, I reckon...

check out:
soul position (smooth lyrical flow, like honey down the earhole)
zion I (fucking excellent)
the coup (off-beat funked-up brilliance)
Ghostface's new(ish) album is also the bollocks
Definitely second that man who said Ty, one of the best mc UK's got at the moment
and anything off Benji B's playlist, he plays a lot of Dilla and Tribe and all kinds of soulful, funked up good stuff. strictly no glocks

Talib Kweli  I'm still in love with the album he did with DJ Hi Tek - Reflection Eternal.
And new, fresh-faced Mr Lupe Fiasco does a good job of it. He's a new favourite for me :)

Oddly enough I didn't think much of the 2-3 tracks of his that I downloaded.......maybe I should give him another go.

Yeah, that was good, but his last one - the Beautiful Struggle - was really disappointing.

What's backpacker hiphop? Is this a euphenism for 'indie/rock friendly' stuff with guitar influences?

I think it's more the kind of abstract experimental stuff (see also laptop hiphop) - Def Jux, Clouddead, Anticon, all that caper.

i thought they sounded well lame when i saw em last year - like they wanted to be the industrial boo-ya tribe or something. granted, they may be better on record, but live they were shite.

s'pose that's often the case though...
