'Alternative' albums lots of people like

like with in utero a lot of people bought it because Nirvana were massive then, much much bigger than when they released Nevermind, so no matter what it sound like (pretty good as i remember) it was always going to sell loads and so end up in loads of people's house

Absolutely.

I was starting to think I'd gone mad reading this thread 'cos no-one had pointed this out.

I was really suprised when The White Stripes sold tons of records.
A huge mainstream audience for blues based garage punk - who knew?

Pretty much anything by Converge - watching those hardcore 'kids' kidding on they like it, when really, they just want to dance to Green Day.

Textures, Nachtmystium, Death, Deicide, Carcass.... etc, etc

Lots of hardcore, death metal, black metal, satanic metal, thrash examples out there.

...and an ex who said she loved Throbbing Gristle till I got out a whole DJ box of it. She dumped soon afterwards. :D

Deicide were one of my favourite (doubtless unintentional) comedy bands. :D
The whole "Glenn Benton gets an upside-down crucifix branded on his forehead" thing made me piss myself laughing too!
