alt.country is a crap name isn't it?

is americana better? - I like it more, but i'm not sure what use it is

No Depression? - not much use as a name either.

great album tho'

I like this kind of stuff mostly, not sure i've heard much new and great for a bit.
I always thought The Old 97's were fairly tedious barroom boogie and I can't stand that kinda crap - am I wrong?

It's a problem with twangy/rootsy music that all the appellations are pretty shit and people argue whether so and so should be included etc etc.

Even No Depression magazine was forced to give the genre the name: "alt.country (whatever that is)"

Not been much new except for the more kookie female variants I posted above. Major labels always chased the Adams type figures and UK promoters spoilt it too by putting on any old lumox from Austin, TX and expecting crowds to turn up.

I like the Old 97s but its i a bit mindless I suppose but I always think of bands like that coming from The Replacements lineage - am I wrong?

Can't say it's ever occurred to me that Ryan Adams is any kind of country. Nothing I've ever heard by that guy sounds remotely countryish.

there was a country thread a while back that covered all this.

Heartbreaker. That's definately got a country feel, in fact I'd go so far as to call it a country album (or alt country, whatever that means). But he did also cover wonderwall once didn't he? I'm pretty sure that was shite (tbh, if there is a good way of covering that song, I still don't want to hear it).

ooh i like this one. do you know if/when an album is coming?

I think it's early days but since she's on a major label, they'll probably have something out this year. The first EP came out at the end of last year. I hope they don't rush her though as she's an awesome talent for an 18 year old.

The Replacements are a whole different level of awesome and you know it!

I fuckin know you know it! :D

Paul Westerberg?...All the fussing and shit aside, Westerberg took things to another level didnt he. Now ive got to find The Replacements album "Pleased to Meet Me" and listen to it.

Hope youre happy!

;) :p...

I do listen to Alt Country however not Ryan Adams. He's a bit boring.
There loads of other stuff thats way better than him.
The Last Town Chorus
Brightblack Morning Light (Check their first album Ala Cali Tucky, not that easy to come by)

Feeling better after that? Emoticon overdrive!
Anyway I'm suitably chastised for daring to say a band was somehow influenced by The Mats. ;)

Hey! Every one of those emotions were real. :D

I know you're right, of course they've influenced LOADS of bands and people.

The Replacements are one of the (veryyyyyyyyy few) bands I get overly precious about.

Even when there's no reason to be. :D

The mere mention of them sends me into the stratosphere. I fuckin absolutely love(d) them. :o (see i'm getting emoticon crazy again...)

Yes I feel better, to answer the question. :D

i love this shit but i can't stand ryan adams. green on red, slobberbone and richard buckner all do it for me though. as do the tailors, who i saw at the windmill the other week

the 'mats are a genre of music all on their own

Oooh...just felt the need to search this up on youtube as I loved it when it came out in 97 and they guy was tipped to be the next Steve Earle. He even looks like him and had the same producer.

Right then, off to watch Guitar Town on youtube. The best alt.country album ever except the term wasn't invented when it came out. Think they called it New Country back then before Nashvegas stole it.
