(Allegedly) Spiked at The Albert

I dunno, I love the Windmill. I'd happily pop in there if it was a bit closer. I tend to drink in the Effra these days. Not so charming since they did it up, but a nice friendly set of punters and all the footy you can eat. Plus live blues and jazz most nights.

I reckon the Albert regulars should take a wander up the Hill and visit the Windy occasionally ;)
I was there last night! http://www.urban75.org/2008/10/inner-city-pirates-brixton.html

It's a mighty fine venue, but you've almost always got to pay on the door so it's not somewhere to go for a casual drink. Plus it's a fair schlep out of central Brixton.
We just want a decent night out, with music but sans aggro. After reading about it all these years and thinking some of you might be there, I was considering The Albert, either as a prelude to somewhere else in Brixton or as a night in itself (not sure when it closes though). Is my thinking one of a brainwrong?
The Albert's great for a night out. I've been there countless times and put on a ton of nights and never had any trouble.

One thing: I'm going to change the thread title to 'allegedly' because it's a rather damning criminal accusation without (as far as I can see) any hard evidence to support it. That isn't to downplay the incident - which I'm clearly concerned about - but a sensible legal precaution.

It's unbelievable how lax some people are with their stuff when they get pissed. They leave coats and handbags stuffed full of passports, money, keys and credit cards unattended for ages and then wonder why it's got nicked when they go looking for it an hour later.

Mind you it was much worse at the Dogstar.

If anyone's coming to Offline, they can always leave their bags behind the DJ bit.

I'll give you a shout if I need you to watch my handbag full of passports, cheers. ;)

Any chance of an ID on the guys for those that intend to keep going there?

Rather obvious I'd have thought now they've time on their hands...

I dont mind the albert but mainly i always feel its a bit too rammed but in general i think its ok, i seem to miss any nastyness these days. :)

Shame you didn't come on an Offline night. They're anything but dead and depressing!
When's the next one? Wouldn't happen to be on the 21st or 22nd of November would it?

I suppose the dates are on some calendar or other which I've never seen before

nope - think it's a great idea and much better than shitty Walkabout.
Nice one :)

 Where do you consider to be central?? It's less than a mile from the tube(looking at google maps)
That's only a long distance if you're wearing heels! Is there summat you're hiding?? ;)

It's near the top of a hill. Bit of a trek. Plus on the way theres a few local 'characters' to navigate past.

I've just moved to the same street, and yeh as Ed says - I'd love to make it my local but as its a venue (the coolest one in s london) paying a coupla quid just to get in and read the paper aint an option...

I love the Windmill, but you'd be extremely hard pressed to describe it as being in central Brixton. It's down a quiet street half way to Streatham.

I brought a few 'non Urban' mates to the Albert in January for the Offline and they all really liked it - although probably more for the 'offline' atmosphere than the pub itself, which appeared a pretty average pub...

I find it very hard to believe that someone got spiked in a pub in brixton that the editor likes to be honest

Ed - i'm not knocking offline nights, you do wonders with the place and it's a good vibe. but midweek what used to be quiet but friendly is now just that little bit more tetchy and edgy.

The Albert had gone really down hill. Everyone I know has said it. Whoever the landlord is has lost their grip on the place and more and more tossers are drinking in there. Whoever the previous landlords/ladies were ran a much tighter ship. Everyone I know who used to drink there won't go there anymore.

I've had a lot of good nights there, but I don't think it's the best pub on a day to day basis. I get the impression that it doesn't have too many regulars so if you go in when there isn't anything on in particular it tends to be very empty.

Although I don't think that has anything to do with the alleged spiking tbh - that could happen anywhere.

If you live on the same street, you should know that it's not near the top of the hill, it's barely half way up.

It's less than a 10 minute walk from central Brixton.

There was a fantastic atmosphere there tonight. Great night. :D
It was great last night, a really good, friendly atmosphere. Nice one!

The problems are coming from the off licence next door - idiots get pissed up and then come in and hassle customers - they usually only come in when the landlord's away so it's difficult for the staff to deal with them.

Apparently off licences should never be allowed to open next to pubs (for previous reasons) but the Albert has Lambeth to thank for creating this situation.

I agree that it can be less than ideal in the weeks, but on weekends I still think it's the best pub in Brixton by miles.
