There is no mystery about "registered keepers" of cars. Every country in the world has some system of requiring drivers to give their details to some government department, for reasons of law enforcement / theft prevention / identifying who was involved in accidents etc.

They have jumped from the concept of a "registered keeper" to the bizarre conclusion that you must somehow sign your car over to the king, or queen, or something, by sending off the V5!

It's like the "freemen on the land" stuff where they always get hung up on misinterpreting words to do with court cases - "dock" "berth" / "birth" etc etc.

So I tell you, no-one here actually owns any land in the UK because it belongs to the crown! I just had this confirmed to me last night.

I think if you search and read about the crown estate UK and a little about UK freehold property law, I believe you will understand the context slightly better.

I don't think this has anything to do with Crown Estates, although I only scrapped a pass in land law so I could easily be wrong.

My understanding is that Crown Estates manage land which is the queen's private wealth. While 'the crown' in land law refers to the state - Britain is a bit like pre revolutionary france so "L'etat c'est moi" still applies at least formally.

Even if I have misunderstood this it reflects my indifference to Land Law rather than any great conspiracy. Otherwise they wouldn't teach it to all law students [edit to add: ie what Jazzzzzzz is banging on about and reading too much into). This is where the distinction between freeholders and leaseholders comes from. Nobody apart from the crown owns land as such they just have different rights over it such as tenancies. Analogous situations exist in other states including modern constitutional republics inter alia so that property reverts to someone - surprise, surprise... the state - when someone dies intestate.
