Aldi/Lidl?

I had a manic episode in Aldi one Sunday and bought a load of really crap fishing tackle. :o

The sausage machine I bought in Lidl for £15 (half price) seems solidly made, though I have yet to use it a year on ;)

Lidl is like a supermarket for surrealists. Nothing is grouped together in any kind of logical way, and they've swapped out several staples of the ordinary shop for the unfathomable. 'Sorry sir, no tomatoes, but we do have a special on air-to-ground missiles'. Plus the staff in ours only speak Polish. And why not?
In our local Lidl they only speak Portuguese. :D But they have some brand names such as Heinz. They also have some rather good satellite dishes and boxes etc. Their Portuguese wine selection isn't that good though.

Why? I got a back protector for £19 that would have cost nearly £60 anywhere else.

I think they mean it from the point of view of finding them for sale in a supermarket, and one that mostly sells food, at that.

I've just been up ALDI and there are no xmas puddings left :(

But as I expected, a huge pile of unsold O-ring kits.
Who the hell would use a generic O-ring when repairing their engine or whatever ?

I went to the lidl in croydon for the first time about four months ago. It was horrible and didn't seem to sell anything useful to me.

Due to Ms T's bad influence at the Christmas craft club - I found myself in Lidl buying their Thai sweet chilli crisps earlier this week - they're the nicest ones I've ever had. I also got these lovely little cream cheese balls which were nestled in a sea of peppercorns and herbs and stuff - god they were lush!!

I once ventured into Aldi in the uk and it was dire. Even things which looked veggie had hidden meaty ingredients. They're OK in Germany, though.

Me, I got a huge mixed packet of O-rings, fibre washers, tap washers ect for a £1, and they have come in very handy for repairing various problems from plumbing in the house to a petrol leak on one of our motorcycles.

Bit of a bump.

I am a Lidl convert of late. Always used to go there on occasion for cheeses, cured meats and dry goods but vouchers for Waitrose/Sainsbury's always held my attention.

Lidl is my monthly shop but there is an Aldi nearby too. Keep reading that Aldi has the better range :hmm: is there much difference?

The aldis I've been to don't have freshly baked bread (or any nice bread really) - no lidls near me so can't really say apart from that.

I do occasionally get a couple of pastries from Lidl but rarely buy bread so that is not really a concern.

I need to place an objection on the use of a “/“ in the title. It implies Aldi and Lidl are interchangeable and equivalent. Any reasonable shopper knows Lidls is verifiably superior to the interloper “Aldi”.

I think there is already a much longer thread...

There are 'things to look out for' in every UK supermarket. Am interested in a monthly basics shop. Don't want to visit multiple places.

I prefer Lidl personally. Their veg and bakery are better, but there's a couple of things I can only get from Aldi so I sometimes make the trek

Ah. Fair one. In that case I find Aldi more consistent, over the last few years they've got far more of a core range of stuff I can get almost every thing I want. Which is lucky as it's my most local supermarket.

Started going to Lidl a bit recently as Ive started passing one. It's quite fun to get some different stuff, but reminds me of Aldi a few years ago, great to stop by sometimes, but not quite there to do all my shopping.

From my experience of both stores I find that Lidl has the freshly baked bread and pastries and a selection of normal branded goods whereas Aldi has the most non-branded goods. Both stores have the middle aisles of wonder and a good selection of red wine (don't drink white or sparkling) to choose from. Where I am I have to make a special effort to get to a Lidl whereas the Aldi is only a couple of minutes miles away.

Aldi is better overall, can do more of a total shop there. Lidl better for pastries and coffee and used to be better for fake dickhead cans but aldi has upped its game recently. Aldi does the best peanut butter and yoghurt, and as I've commented elsewhere the 85p frozen cheese and tomato pizza they do is the king of cheap pizza, its miles ahead of the competition. Both do disappointing pittas.

We'd always go to Aldi, you get used to the weird layout and products where their greatest expense is hiring the lawyers to make sure they're just different enough from the products they're trying to copy without getting sued. The chocolate aisle is great, "racers" "titan" "bubbly" oh come on. Anyway we recently switched to Asda so we could get the home delivery. Well we've realised Aldi is actually much better, just the basics stuff is much nicer than basic asda stuff which generally tastes like crap. Cool story bro.
