thru that brainbombs album i also found out about a related lp by No Balls "More Is More", I actually prefer it musically, it is pretty brutal

    New Ride album out today!

Just apprehensively hit play on Spotify.....

Slowdive didn't let me down with their album earlier in the year. Let's see if Ride can match 'em?

Not overly keen on first listen - first track gets the album off to a flying start and there were a couple of other good'uns but on the whole I'm fairly under-whelmed.

Will put the Slowdive album on again - for the 200th time.

    Zaire 74: The African Artists

We all know about the Rumble in the Jungle, yeah? Mohammed Ali and George Forman fighting in Kinshasa. Shifty financial backers. Mobuto. And the Zaire 74 festival featuring James Brown, Bill Withers, BB King and the Detroit Spinners. All in the film When We Were Kings. But not quite all, as none of the African artists sets have been released before. Until now. 2 CDs/3 LP featuring 4 complete sets from the festival plus various other acts. The sound recording is amazing - it sounds studio quality clear. Highlights are the funky sets by Tabu Ley Rochereau & Afrisa and Franco & TPOK Jazz Orchestra. But there's also afro-rock by Abeti and Miriam Mabeka in her prime. If you've got any interest in afro music in the 70s you'll want this.

    2raumwohnung - Nacht und Tag

Inga Humpe is my favourite German synthpop singer (tbf there's limited competition). She started out in the Neue Deutsche Welle band Neonbabies in the late 70s, before going synth and working with Conny Plank, Trevor Horn, Robert Fripp, The Beloved, releasing some techno on Tresor (remixed by Underground Resistance) and then for the last 17 years being in 2raumwohnung with Tommi Eckart (who released under various aliases on Harthouse, Disko B & Rising High in the early 90s). They've put out loads of albums of various flavours of poppy dance music, but this latest one is great. Or at least half great; there's 2 CDs, one with 'day' versions of the 10 songs, one with 'night' versions. And it's the night versions CD that this is all about - a flawless German technopop album, sung in a mix of German and English, Dieter Meier (Yello) popping in for a duet on one song. The day versions are almost superfluous, although maybe when I've played it to death it might be nice to listen to chilled versions of the songs.

This is the single: Somebody Lonely and Me

This is out today, to reasonably reviews. I haven't bought it yet, but saw it in HMV this morning. It seems that, at least on some editions, they've stuck some "bonus tracks" on the end, including Creep, Unpretty and No Scrubs. What's the bloody point of that? Surely everyone interested will already have CrazySexyCool and Fanmail?

I've only just got round to picking it up, but the Richard Dawson album I mentioned earlier is just brilliant.

How are you feeling, a month on? I've just stuck on Nowhere to see if I like it enough to take a punt on the new one. I really like Slowdive, wasn't blown away at all by mbv, and have thoroughly liked efforts by new upstarts Pinkshinyultrablast and Venera 4, so I'm wondering whether to continue my shoegaze renaissance.
