A great actor. One of the last of that cohort of working class actors - made some great films, an interesting life and no boot-licker or groveler.

Loved Gumshoe, The Dresser and Under the Volcano. Mind you not sure that some of Eddie Ginleys lines in Gumshoe wouldnt go without comment these days.

He was a good Salford lad, my uncle knew him from primary school*, I think. We saw him occasionally over the years at Old Trafford, & he'd still let on to my dad & uncle. Don't think he had any idea who they were, but he'd let on.

*Edited after checking - cubs/scouts, not school - Finney didnt go to catholic schools.

Speaking of which, Finney had two roles in Miller's Crossing. Apparently he kept hanging about the set after all his scenes had been done, and the Coens let him have another shot.

That looks terrific - & the scene's thoroughly contemporary in terms of the woman's interaction with the regenerating slum & its inhabitants. Great footage of Pendleton as the back to backs come down & the flats go up. Directed by Finney, screenplay by Shelagh Delaney, apparently.

One of my favourite films and of his roles - the scene where he jumps out of the window and machine guns the lot of them gives me goosebumps.

Isn't it magnificent - he's appeared to be washed-up and gone soft on his moll until that point, then you suddenly realise he's fucking terrifying.
