Barry is better on the left than Downing now?

And you introduce a clever qualifier there with 'natural'. There's a good half dozen footballers who are better on the left than Barry, natural or not.
Go on then, who?

abangedawhore ain't ready for enlgand yet and is viewed as a striker by o'neil anyway.

Barry is a central midfielder not a winger he can't go past people and has little flair. I think he has been unlucky not to pick up a few more caps though. But hes competing against a lot of epople for a central midfield berth.

As for better left wingers then barry. i'd play. j.Cole, downing, etherington, wayne bridge at the very least in front of him and to be honest i'd be inclined to pick matty taylor as a winger over barry, he simply isn't a wide player.

Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Rooney, Cole, Cole, Bridge, Downing, SWP, Routledge, Hargreaves, P Neville, Carrick, Jenas, Milner, Nolan....etc etc etc none natural left sided players (except Bridge) but all better than Barry and better options for doing a job on the left.

In fact, are there any that'd be worse?

Lee Hendrie maybe?

K&U is proceeding from a false premise. Barry has played centre half, left back and left midfield for Villa but is not, and never has been, a central midfielder.

I think that the "natural left sided" qualification is an important one. Throughout Sven's reign, the left side of midfield was unbalanced by virtue of the fact that we lacked a left-footed midfielder of sufficient standard. Playing right-footed midfielders (with the possible exception of Joe Cole) meant that they were predictable (because in order to cross the ball they would have to come inside) and reduced Ashley Cole's effectiveness on the overlap. If Giggs was English, he'd have held down the position for years and that sort of flair is what we have been lacking. Barry isn't the fastest, but he can beat men and puts in a good cross. He also has a versatility which makes him ideal for tournament squads.
