African Nations Cup 2010

Does anyone know why this tournament is when it is? Is there some clear and obvious reason why they hold it in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere's season, where a lot of their best players are playing and only a few months before a World Cup? What was wrong with having it in the summer last year?

from what Ive seen it's awful. Watching Cameroon v Zambia today reminded me of Zaire in 1974 - absolute rubbish. Few great players on show brought down by joke goalkeepers for starters.

Off the top of my head I'd say the weather - it's a pretty hot continent in the summer.

3-2 Amazing.

Fun game even though I was supporting Zambia. Cameroon have to be the world leaders in unpredictability. They can look world beaters and completely appalling nigh on simultaneously.

Disappointed for Kennedy Mweene though. One howler and otherwise sterling work and he gives away a vital goal. Meanwhile Kameni fumbles the ball several times and only gives away a penalty that he should have been sent off for.

well why is it held every 2 years?
Why are the Olympics or the World Cup held every 4

I don't bloody know, but as ericjarvis says it's up to them what they do and I would imagine a large number of players don't play in Europe.

It's the same reason (I believe) that there's 18 months between Ashes series - Oz and England have different seasons so it can't be held at the same time in both countries.

I could be hideously wrong about that though.

Basically because it's up to the African nations how they organise it, and they have every right to do so in a way that suits them and not the bloody English Premiership.

Its not just the Premiership, its every single League in the northern hemisphere apart from some of the very northern leagues who play in their summer.

A lot of Africa is hot all year round, so I can't see that being a problem.

If they played ever two years in the summer from last year they wouldn't interfere with any competition. Surely this must effect the attractiveness of an African player, knowing your going to lose them at what is the most crucial time of the season every two years.

It's not. Many leagues in Europe are currently taking their winter break. The Bundesliga for instance.

The main thing, though, it's not up to the African nations to organise their competition in a way to suit Europeans.

yep - expect more to get ditched - one of the reasons Wenger got rid of Toure and Adebayor - and rightly so.

Utter nonsense.

It was dressing room differences.
Toure fell out with Gallas and Adebayor thought he was too good to play for us.
There departures had nothing to do with their nationalities or the Cup Of African Nations.

Looking at your Username,i hope you are not an Arsenal fan.
(I can't recall you ever posting on that thread.)

I said 'one' of the reasons - and it was one of the reasons. If you've never seem me posting on that thread I suggest that you probably never went to school and cannot read. Mind you, the way you spelt 'their' I'm not surprised you haven't seen me posting there.

Get over yourself.
It was not even a factor in their departures.

Of course it was. Any sensible manager would reduce exposure to African players leaving for the daft tournament every 2 years.
