Advice on employing a cleaner

my butler and the rest of the domestic staff say that cleaners should be paid on the day they clean.

cook always makes shortbread on the day the char lady calls for some reason

Some interesting stuff here..

http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/C/countryhouse/edwardianlife/family_address.html

"While the Housemaids will clean the House during the day, they should make every care and attention never to be observed by you doing their duties. If by chance you do meet, you should expect them to "give way" to you by standing still and averting their gaze, whilst you walk past, leaving them un-noticed. By not acknowledging them, you will spare them the shame of explaining their presence."

I tell "Miss" about this tomorrow.

Maybe I try to find an Edwardian manual on maintaining a domestic staff. :)

word of advice.

never ever let your gardener meet the cleaning staff.

they will just go to the potting shed and drink T all afternoon. Likewise the stable hands.

I want a cleaner but with 6 big dogs its not going to happen.

The cleaning team have arrived!! They looked alittle bemused.. but are good on averting the gaze!
If they do a good job you can send them round our place.

Blimey - how Urban has changed - this would have turned into a nasty bunfight not so long ago.

it's only not turned into one now because this is hollis on a wind up.

Our cleaner has just handed in her notice after four years. I'm actually quite gutted.... but pleased for her because she's going to do a plumbing course!

I am considering this.....

Seems really decadent but I guess you can look at it as paying someone an above minimum wage to improve both yours and their quality of life?

I actually like cleaning but the current abode is getting the better of me

bit late to this... but

- If possible, pay monthly by standing order. No constant cash remembering.
- paid holidays and sick time (see above).
- Keys as soon as trust in place. Being trusted builds trustworthiness.
- Better to get the cleaner to do a deep clean of one room than a superficial clean of the whole house. You can wipe surfaces yourself, it's worth paying someone to get behind the fridge.
- Yes you provide materials. (Although we've had cleaners who provide their own, nicked from their office-cleaning night jobs).

Hark at him!

Lord & Lady Muck having trouble dusting the silverware???

At least getting a cleaner will leave you more time free to shoot furry animals in the countryside with Giles & Tarquin!

:p

I'm considering employing some cleaners for an End of Tenancy clean. Anyone got any London recommendations?

Hollis, did you use an agency?

We're looking into getting a cleaner - looked at selclene - but unsure about the liability if someone walks off with all our stuff.

Our cleaner is brilliant. She comes round every 2 weeks for 2 hours - charges £7.50 an hour.

We have a dishwasher, so dishes aren't a problem, and we never leave the kitchen in too bad a state.

On top of being brilliant at cleaning, she's lovely :o

I think these agencies are probably insured.

In the past we just stuck a card in the newsagent's window. I'd always rather pay direct than go through an agency, your cleaner then gets all the money.

Our last four cleaners have all been recruited by the departing one though, we haven't advertised for years.

I know an extremely reputable, experienced and trustworthy cleaner, charges £50 an hour, let me know if helpfull, would travelling expenses be paid?
