Adsl 2+

Good point. Can anyone point me in the direction of a more independent site for this kind of thing?

When I signed up to BT they informed me that I could get 6.5mb... afterwards I found out it was less than 2.

Checking the Bulldog site though... they were at least honest enough to tell me the truth before I signed up... so try there for more genuine feedback.

Much better. On my 8meg connection in town, I max out at about 650-700 kbps on a well seeded file, at home on me 18meg connection, I max out at about 1.5meg. Big difference.

During the world cup, I could stream two matches at once at about 350kbps each, and have azureus open at the same time without a hitch.

I've never found a better torrent than 300kbps, from Oink.

Is 21MB any better than 8MB though? Has anyone ever downloaded anything at more than 800kbps?

Yup, once or twice come accross decent servers and had 1500-2000kbs. Was fucking cool!:D

Who's on this, with who and what speeds are you getting?

After great performance from bulldogs LLU set up a few years ago, the 16meg for 25pm looks quite tempting.

about 18-19Mbits (advertised as 20Mb)

I'm on Wanadoo which I'll no doubt come to regret (I already can't get my forwarded ports to actually work) but it's cheap as chips (around 17quid a month) and works at the advertised speed. I'm in Holland btw.

I've got stuff from Uknova at around 1.4meg

Oink and Uknova are the fastest torrent sites I'm a member of, but rarely more then 300/400kbps.

Are there any good general torrents sites? demonoid is ok, but speeds never get very fast, 50kbps would be a treat from demonoid.

Private trackers are much faster. I use www.torrentbytes.net for Hollywood movies, American TV and games. Torrents from there go like shit off a shovel. Full 4.7gig DVD in an hour and ten. Their invites are closed at the mo, but they cull inactive accounts daily, so keep trying to sign up.

My Be connection is 1.15km from the exchange and it's running at 2mb :(

Ah bollox, that's the distance I am from my exchange too...this shit just gets more and more complicated.

It's not the distance that is a major factor over such a small distance as 1.15k. It's the line quality. That distance over good 0.5mm copper cable would support at least 8megs easily and probably more. There is probably some shitty old aluminium cable in the ground. 100's of metres of it perhaps and it can't support high broadband speed. The signal to noise ratio goes bolloxed to put it technically. It's not cost effective at the moment for Bt to upgrade this shit cable unfortunately. It would make my life a lot easier if they did!

I see, is there anyway you can find out the line quality before moving to a new ISP and trying it!?

You can enquire through the isp i suppose...but the fact is, if you're getting braodband via the bt line...whoever the isp is...if the bt line is shit, you can't get the best braodband speed. Simple as that. Some isp's have set up equiptment in bt exchanges to maximise the service they can provide over the bt line but it is still very dependant on the acual quality of the physical pair of wires from the exchange to your house. If it's shit wire you have no chance.
Do you have cable in your area? It may be worth looking into cable broadband although I don't think as many isp's use them.

try a different adsl2+ router plugged into the master socket

the first bebox they sent me gave really crap speeds - 1.9mb d/l 0.25mb u/l

I assumed it was down to a poor quality line until I tried a different box.

Nice one! "You are approximately 1.15km from the exchange (straight line distance)."

So that means what, 18mbt downloads?

Ask the question over at www.adsguide.org.uk - they masturbate over lines stats all day long. Heck, they'll even coach you through your routers stats and tell you what you'll get to the nearest mbit.

BT do 2nd lines for 125 quid, which amount to about 225 for the year including line rental.

As long as they do not do line sharing , that would be a good way to ensure that you had a nice quality line.

There isn't a master socket, three seperate cables come into the house to the three rooms where there's a socket from the lines to the telegraph pole (which looks in a right state!!!!) I am considering sabotaging it so they need to replace it!

Re, box....will do, box is a bit shitty, a speedtouch (shudder) jobby. I get DG834s for work so will test one of them.
