actors who always play themselves in movies

They're on talk shows all the bloody time being interviewed as *themselves*, so it's perfectly accurate to say that if their one persona in films is exactly the same as their own character (in things like accent, mannerisms, expressions etc), that they are playing themselves. :p
In which case we can drop christian slater, isn't he welsh?

Most young women actors are allowed one movie persona between them all - supportive love interest.

 (at fillums, not you!)

Jack Nicolson
He didn't used to and there have been a few (really good) roles recently when he's tried to break out - the Pledge and About Schmidt.
Also Pacino didn't used to either, and he's certainly not as bad as De Niro

Julia Roberts - Oceans 12.
Plays someone else, who pretends to be Julia Roberts for the day. Because she looks like Julia Roberts.

f-cking awful.

I always liked the honesty of Sid James who (unless he was meant to be Henry VII) usually payed a character called Sid, or a variation (Sir Sidney Ruf-Diamond springs to mind). From the same era the unvarying but wonderful Terry-Thomas.

And, then when she gets a bit wrinklier the succesful actress has a the wide choice of mother or harridan (or both).

Yes and no...

No: Samuel L Jackson has become a bit of a parody of himself since Tarantino (he even plays himself in ads for debtmongers Barclaycard!) but it has not ALWAYS been so. See "Jungle Fever" where his performance as a cracked-out loser is very different from his usual smooth-ass psycho performance poet schtick.

Ving Rhames on the other hand does always play himself.

Ooo! good one:
CHRISTOPHER WALKEN. Is basically always really, really scary. They say he's a nice guy who longs to do comedies. I think he was even in some - and iirc he ended up seeming even scarier. (They also say he's a trained tap dancer. incredible but true. I've seen him in interview saying he also yearns to dance in movies. Anyone ever seen Chris doing a hot shoe shuffle in anything?)

Have you not seen the Fatboy Slim video directed by Spike Jonze, Weapon Of Choice - he really goes for it in that, and he can dance!

Morgan Freeman seems to end up being Morgan Freeman in everything he's been in.
He always plays dignified men struggling with their consciences, but for all we know, he could be an awful rotter

I would have agreed with you, and do in principle, but clint eastwood direct ed and starred in million dollar baby and that and the spaghetti westerns saves his bacon every time.

a gem, sorry for all the responses, but all the other threads are inactive and this one is entertaining.
