They're on talk shows all the bloody time being interviewed as *themselves*, so it's perfectly accurate to say that if their one persona in films is exactly the same as their own character (in things like accent, mannerisms, expressions etc), that they are playing themselves.

Yes and no...

No: Samuel L Jackson has become a bit of a parody of himself since Tarantino (he even plays himself in ads for debtmongers Barclaycard!) but it has not ALWAYS been so. See "Jungle Fever" where his performance as a cracked-out loser is very different from his usual smooth-ass psycho performance poet schtick.

Ving Rhames on the other hand does always play himself.
