Actions Against Immigration Raids and the Hostile Environment

zedr

new but not *that* new
Couldn't find a dedicated thread for this. Seem to be more and more anti-raids (and similar) groups popping up around the country so figured it made sense to start one*.

A new campaign group made up of young people from the Advocacy Academy in Brixton are hosting a rally on Windrush square this Saturday to draw attention to the Home Office's immigration raids.

Text from them:
It would be amazing to see some of you this Saturday for the rally and if you could share in your networks, that would be really appreciated !!

BFAIR is a Brixton based, youth led organisation set up with the aim of making immigration raids a thing of the past.

We will be hosting a rally at 10:15am-12pn on January 6th, 2024, before the Palestine actions happening that day. The rally will take place at Windrush Square in Brixton and there will be hot drinks, leaflets and speakers.

Details of an immigration raid being stopped in dulwich on new years day.

RAID RESISTED
At 9am on New Years Day, immigration officers tried to carry out an immigration raid on a property on Wood Vale, SE23. Fortunately, a member of the public saw them, and came to tell the residents their rights - not to let them in!Here’s what happened.

The passer-by saw what was happening & immediately told the residents they didn’t have to let immigration enforcement in, speak to them or comply with them.

Immigration enforcement were forced to confirm this & then the residents closed the door on them and they left.

It's really important to share & save this info, to help protect each other from the home office and hostile environment.

Read these, and save them on your phone or pick up a leaflet and keep it somewhere safe.

Some lessons:

- Immigration Enforcement will choose anti-social times to carry out raids.

- One of the vans was an unmarked people carrier.

- Neighbours & passers-by knowing simple info can be really supportive and can help prevent immigration raids.

ive missed posting up quite a few successful raid resistances, but looks like this week is going to be a busy one.

a few hotels in west and south London which are housing people awaiting asylum claims are going to be shipping people off to the Bibi Stockholm this week.

and with the passing of the Rwanda bill, lots of people have removed letters informing they will be deported imminently.

sadly the first person has been deported to Rwanda under the new scheme.

there is currently an overnight blockade of lunar house in croydon where a few asylum seeker have been detained.

Footage from Peckham earlier today, including a brief interview with Laurence Smith, founder of the Lewisham Donation Hub charity, whose volunteers were among those tragetted), where members of the public gathered to assert The People's Priorities:

One of my work colleagues had this today - he does a bit of bike Deliverooing part time and last night was much busier than usual, the word amongst the riders is that the police in Edinburgh have been having a big crackdown on illegal e-bike conversions in partnership with the Home Office due to the demographic that uses these bikes, and some guys have been detained and others are not riding because they're now worried about being detained. This is gossip essentially but worth being aware of.

Coach driver who was in Peckham:

Do the Home Office recruit directly or are they hiring these coaches from a company somewhere? I hear the roads are even worse for tyres up North than they are down here...

A senior member of the Church of England has now intervened to assert The People's Priorities:

"A prominent Church of England bishop has praised the protesters who successfully disrupted Home Office attempts to move asylum seekers to the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset ..."

‘Compassion for the most vulnerable’: bishop thanks protesters who blocked asylum coaches

“I want to thank the local people who have stood up for those who are housed on their doorstep. Their actions show that there is compassion within the community to care for people who are most vulnerable, so that the people most at risk are not moved from pillar to post.

“Our Lord showed compassion for the most vulnerable and I am heartened to see this in action in Margate, so thank you.”

An update on the position of the humans seeking asylum in Margate:

Home Office issues letters withdrawing plan to move asylum seekers from Margate to Bibby Stockholm

not sure if the home office have a regular deal with specific coach companies but looks like some locals have decided to let the coach company from the peckham raid know their displeasure!

there have been a lot more attempts by the home office to remove single men under 40 from hotel accommodation to the Bibby Stockholm. some have been successfully prevented, others not.

ive heard the cops broke someone's arm at this second attempted resistance.

seems like the cops are trying to clamp down on the resistances pretty hard. 44 arrests at peckham, 10 at elephant and castle and many more elsewhere. seen a lot of call outs for
police station support.

theres also been removal attempts in camden, west london and thornton heath

sorry for all the meta links, can find much info about it elsewhere.

hard to get enough people out quick enough to replicate Peckham's success (esp since so many people have bail conditions to avoid immigration vans)

Oh and SDS are raising money for ppl removed from the hotels and arrestees here:
looks like there were some issues with this fundraiser as all the money was returned.
