Acres

Brian Potter in Phoenix Nights said "If we build it, they will come".

I think the lesson learnt is: don't base your business plan on a sitcom.

Like your style Rennie - don't want to go to somewhere alone so you post the same thing twice, boosting the numbers somewhat...

;) :p

Still, I like the way they've put some barriers out the front of Acres, so that you can zig-zag your way past the red ropes on entry, like you're queuing up for a ride at Disneyland.

Very necessary for crowd control there, dontcha know.

Oi!!!! :p this thread reminds me of when I was younger... my mates always wanted to go to the most crowded bars in town where u'd never get a seat. I prefered the peace n quiet of less famous establishments.

perhaps Acres is what I need then. me for company and big burly bouncer to tell me i'm "in". @ self

:) I peeked in as I walked past the other day - the only thing I could see (they've made it dfficult to look in) was somebody on a bar stool who looked like a bored barman...

Maybe the 'market' has been intelligent enough to realise that ....

... in the classic, Oxford Dictionary of Quotations-worthy words of former Brixton resident and sometime Urbanite, NVP ...

Pubs Are Ace. 'Bars' are shit

(and by the sound of it, 'exclusive' membership 'bars' are even worse ... )

Bet they don't do any beer worthy of the name. Tossers ...

Are they even remotely busy on Fridays / Saturdays?

I would love to be a fly on the wall at their update to investors meetings :D

Erm, doesn't it advertise itself as a wine and members bar? I wasn't expecting to go an sup a pint of frothing 'Landlord's Tadger' and prop myself up by the grand piano.

I like a real ale as much as the next man, but at this rate I can see WoW jumping on his hobby horse and protesting about the lack of beer in his local bakery...

;) :p

We've walked past it at various times, including Fridays/Saturdays, and no, it's been tumbleweed territory every single time...

I just feel sorry for them now, they spent all that money doing the place up and NOBODY goes there, while the other club just a few meters further down toward the Town Hall is always packed!!!!

Maybe the next Offline should be there! It'd be very surreal! :D :D

Yeah, I'm starting to feel a little sorry for them TBH. I just hope that at least they manage to pay back parents/friends/granny's savings etc, if they used any investment of that nature.

Don't feel sorry for them - they're idiots - have they done ANY market research?

Dunno.
But having put together business plans myself, it's sometimes easy to get swept along with a 'good' idea.
Plus the fact that even if they have done MR, that's all it is - research - you still never know which way it's going to swing in reality until you've taken the risk, spent the money and opened.

Whether or not they're idiots, I just hope it's them & money men that lose & not friends or family.

beer and bread have the same origin, and I agree that a good bakery should be able to provide good beer as well. and I will defend WoW's right to get a decent beer from his local baker and his right to protest if he doesn't get his way.

on the barricades!

surely they must've realized the only view would be a Tesco car park?

and I don't knwo what planet they're from but that doesn't smack of exclusive poncy members' bar to me!

Apols for the mega bump, but on my way up to Lidl today I noticed it's to become yet another new incarnation. It is to be ELECTRIC SOCIAL. Doors to open Summer 2011 apparently :D

Gold Coast not so golden after all? I've noticed the signs btw, what's the dealio? What type of place are we looking at?

'it's going to be mash of food, music and london life' according to their facebook page. their website is just one page with unwelcome music and should have been launched last month.

Three months then...
:D

I went past on the bus the other day and it struck me just how much that stretch was 'in motion' with Gold Coast and Fiesta both changing (again). Gold Coast seemed to have a thriving following for the world cup - and cooked some decent chicken at the country show - but I didn't see much elsewhere there, not that I passed much to be fair. Believe they have another bar somewhere else fairly local, or had as the case might be.

:D

I'd give it 4 at least :D

Tbf anything's gotta be better than the brief club/halal kebab shop combo :D

I have no problem with the place but I find the whole massive glass windows with stunning views over Acre Lane/Tescos car park slightly bizarre!

Anyone know what it was built for/as in the first place? Looks like it could've made a good car dealership at some stage.
