academics and plagiarism

i was reading about the sorry career of michael stone, late philosphy professor at the university of leuven, yesterday. it turned out everything from at least his phd on had been plagiarised. i wondered whether people here had ever encountered such flagrant plagiarism, and whether it is at all widespread among the research postgraduate / academic community.
